Attorney General Phil Weiser released the following statement in response to reports that the Trump administration will move Space Command Headquarters from Colorado Springs to Alabama: https://bit.ly/4plxdGf

Attorney General Phil Weiser released the following statement in response to reports that the Trump administration will move Space Command Headquarters from Colorado Springs to Alabama: “The Trump administration should not play political games with our nation’s military readiness and military families. Moving Space Command Headquarters to Alabama is not only wrong for our national defense, but it’s harmful to hundreds of Space Command personnel and their families. These El Paso County residents are our neighbors. They relied on the federal government’s decision to keep Space Command HQ in Colorado Springs – they bought homes for their families, selected schools for their children, and have contributed to the local economy. “The Colorado Attorney General’s Office has been preparing in the event the president made such an unlawful decision to move Space Command HQ. If the Trump administration takes this step – I’m prepared to challenge it in court.”

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser issued the following statement in support of Denver Public Schools and Denver East High School:

“I stand with Denver East High School and their student-led initiative that offers multiple restroom options for students. For 16 years, Colorado law has allowed students to use restrooms consistent with their gender identity, and this has not been an issue. That’s because we are a state that believes in freedom and equality, which includes creating learning environments free from discrimination and harassment where all students can thrive. The illegal and baseless conclusion by Trump’s education department that this policy violates federal law is nothing more than a bullying tactic.” - Phil Weiser, Colorado Attorney General

Attorney General Phil Weiser issued the following statement on today’s court win in a lawsuit against the Trump administration over cuts to AmeriCorps. Colorado is one of the lead states in this lawsuit.

Statement from AG Phil Weiser reading: “The illegal cuts to AmeriCorps threaten Colorado communities that rely on program volunteers to provide services to military veterans, older Americans aging in place, people dealing with substance abuse, and wildfire mitigation support. The true spirit of service embodied by the hundreds of AmeriCorps members and volunteers across the state is something that gives me hope in the future. As the judge says in the opinion, ‘these volunteers represent the best of us.’ The mass closure of AmeriCorps programs, removal of national service corps members from service, and the termination of federal funding makes no sense. “Every region in Colorado has directly benefited from the contributions of AmeriCorps members. This win today is important, but I won’t stop fighting until we’ve permanently put a stop to the Trump administration’s reckless and shortsighted attempt to destroy AmeriCorps and the spirit of community service for which it stands.”

A joint statement from AG @philweiser.bsky.social and a coalition of attorneys general from across the country on U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments today regarding birthright citizenship.

Statement from Attorney General Phil Weiser: “We were proud to stand together to defend birthright citizenship and the rule of law at the U.S. Supreme Court today. For 127 years, since the Supreme Court settled the issue, the law has been clear: if you are born in this country, you are a citizen of the United States and of our States. Administrations of both parties have consistently respected that right ever since. As every court to have considered the policy agrees, the President’s attempt to end birthright citizenship is patently unconstitutional. The Trump Administration’s argument before the Supreme Court today—that the President should be permitted to strip American citizenship from people based solely on the state in which they happen to be born—would upend settled law and settled practice and would produce widespread chaos and disruption. The President cannot rewrite the Constitution and contradict the Supreme Court’s own holdings with the stroke of a pen.”

A statement from AG @philweiser.bsky.social on the fundamental right of due process:

Quote from Attorney General Phil Weiser: “Due process is a fundamental right guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. It is a core American value and it protects everyone here in the United States. It’s flatly unconstitutional and outrageous for the president or any government agency to seize a person, imprison them, or ship them to another country like El Salvador on a whim—offering no hearing, no option to have an attorney, and no notice. Our Constitution demands that everyone in the United States, no matter how they came here, be treated fairly and lawfully—and that includes the Fifth Amendment’s guarantee of due process of law. Without that protection, our nation will become like Russia and China, where people are regularly imprisoned without due process. I will continue to do everything in my power to defend our Constitution and ensure that everyone—regardless of what they look like, what language they speak, or where they were born—receives the due process our Constitution promises.”
