Seems like the story is missing an actor. Trump and the Republican trifecta + SCOTUS are the ones destroying institutions.

How he pronounced "most" and "out" was the tip-off.

It's the same as when kids walk out of their high schools to protest gun violence or censorship. They aren't expelled, they just went outside to protest. Here, employees were expressing solidarity with the 4 colleagues who resigned together. And articles included that context.
Coltrane, the dog (@coltranethedog.bsky.social) reply parent
Some are. But leadership is constantly pivoting every issue back to high prices and calling dangerous and unprecedented abuses of power "distractions."

Especially when the bot is programmed to anthropomorphize itself by claiming to think and understand and apologize and compliment the users. It's the power of suggestion and it's why people believe in psychics.

The LLM literally doesn't know what words mean. Words are tokens that are auto-generated based on probability. This is why LLMs don't identify sarcasm or parody or multiple meanings of words and phrases that depend on context, i.e. the meaning of adjacent words/sentences (at a minimum).
Coltrane, the dog (@coltranethedog.bsky.social) reply parent
Right, and all of those facts are likely already in your medical records if you've received any treatment (Rx or therapy) or had your height and weight noted at a doctor's appointment.

It would be easy to demonstrate a compelling state interest in preventing software that simulates speech from cheering on children's suicidal ideation/plans or offering tips after a failed suicide attempt. In other words, this alleged speech can be limited without violating the 1st Amendment.

Resources aren't scarce. Private companies are free to fund their own scientific goals. The government funds science without regard to it's presumed profit potential which is good b/c we're terrible at such predictions. Discoveries can come from anywhere in science. What rights?
Coltrane, the dog (@coltranethedog.bsky.social) reply parent
How is the government "ruining" science? (Or how WAS it doing do before 2025)
Coltrane, the dog (@coltranethedog.bsky.social) reply parent
I can see what he's thinking but (1) this level of troop presence is not sustainable (assuming it's even legal), and more importantly, (2) more cops don't decrease crime. Maybe he should get a taser or a whistle like college students do.
Coltrane, the dog (@coltranethedog.bsky.social) reply parent
What is "rights-protecting government" in the context of funding science? Government funded science has never been politicized to this extreme degree and most of what Trump is doing is anywhere from blatantly unconstitutional to straight up criminal. He has fixed NOTHING.
Coltrane, the dog (@coltranethedog.bsky.social) reply parent
Oops! Sorry I misread the context and thought you supported more enforcement or longer sentences. It's a mistake we (US) make quite often.

Your response is nonsensical. Trump drastically and with no forethought cut/revoked/cancelled grants and binding contracts with thousands of scientists and universities. In what possible way does that support what I wrote? BTW, I noticed you didn't answer my question.

Life in prison is not a proportional sentence for identity theft. No amount of harsh state action will stop crime. We might avoid repeat offending by spending money on rehabilitation and getting people jobs and housing when they get out so they aren't inclined to steal again though ...

Who funds it then? Private companies accountable only to shareholders with a pure profit motive? That's even worse! Taxpayer $ w/minimal interference had worked for decades. We had an amazing scientific research infrastructure that greatly benefitted Americans. This fool has destroyed it.

I disagree about the Internet. I learn new words all the time reading articles online. It's just easier to look them up now. It's also famously easy to go down rabbit holes with infinite information available in seconds. FYI, I do hate "AI" and personally collect and read dictionaries.
Coltrane, the dog (@coltranethedog.bsky.social) reply parent
Dozens of advanced countries figured this out and absolutely DON'T have mass shootings at even a fraction of the rate of the US. Gun restrictions are a no-brainer. So is mental health care, but not b/c of mass shootings. Our far bigger problem is suicide. Separate problems, separate solutions.

Tip: w/US health insurance it's free. BUT there's a loophole. A screening mammogram is free. A diagnostic mammogram is not. If they add an ultrasound or have you repeat the mammogram in 6 months everything's diagnostic for the that time PLUS the following year - even if they don't find anything.

Which is why Dem candidates would be better off just taking a position and confidently conveying it to potential voters. Most people will still vote for someone they disagree with on one or two issues if they see the candidate as authentic and principled.

I answered a phone poll recently. It seems like there's a big difference between a disinterested person reading a paragraph over the phone (or voters reading texts) and an enthusiastic candidate making a persuasive argument. Polls are massively over-valued as gauges of voter sentiment.

If you are crazy then so am I. Memes and snarky tweets can be fun and cathartic. HOWEVER, there's no evidence they matter electorally or shift the culture back toward democracy. The Lincoln Project was very good at that sort of thing. It didn't work.
Coltrane, the dog (@coltranethedog.bsky.social) reply parent
Exactly. I'll give him credit for promoting and signing the redistricting legislation. That's important. His trolling isn't doing anything but helping online Dem grifters. Remember how clever and funny the Lincoln Project was at first? Yeah, that didn't do shit to stop Trump.

I'm a liberal politics junkie and familiar w/Newsom for years - so not an example of his memes reaching anyone who isn't already committed to Dems/anti-Trump. It's not obvious to me that AI and ALL CAPS posts are making a difference electorally or building a movement, tho?
Coltrane, the dog (@coltranethedog.bsky.social) reply parent
What do you think it's at the top of doing? I see it giving dopamine hits to politics junkies on the nominal left but it's not going to shame Trumpers (impossible) or get traction with people who don't follow the news/politics but would be outraged by what Trump is doing if they knew.

You really think these crappy memes are "weaken[ing] the hold he has over our nation"?? Talk about being duped six ways to Sunday! It's embarrassing that liberals think this is activism or that it will have any effect whatsoever on the Trump regime's priorities or actions.
Coltrane, the dog (@coltranethedog.bsky.social) reply parent
How do Twitter posts stop Trump from cancelling elections? People have been brilliantly mocking Trump (the politician) since 2015. It's fun to do but please don't fall for the argument that these memes and mean Tweets are of some kind of brilliant political strategy.
Coltrane, the dog (@coltranethedog.bsky.social) reply parent
Where is any evidence that shitty AI memes boosting Twitter's engagement numbers are making a difference or effectively fighting fascism? Just admit you like dumb jokes and stop acting like this is activism somehow.
