Awesome pick, it's an amazing game
cosmo (@cosmo0.fr) reply parent
I have tried two things: - putting like 3 games (total) in my RG and sticking with them - putting a lot of games and hitting "random" and sticking with the pick ... Neither work lol So now I'm just picking things I like to play. I stopped RPGs on these bc I never have the time.

Some people really like tea. There are tea houses they can go to to sample different flavors and varieties of tea. People have their own tools for preparing and consuming tea. Brewing tea has a particular process and everyone has their own techniques. #Shmups #stg

I don't see why you attach that behavior to shmuppers - plenty of these guys around in all genres, as long as there's a way for them to feel superior.

Good news! Cosmo Dreamer Like Dreamer And all the games by this dev. Though they're more Touhou-like than Cave-ish.

Yes lives system are the basis of shmups. Remove the lives and there's just not any point to the game. And I say that as someone who generally dislikes lives and loves shmups.
cosmo (@cosmo0.fr) reply parent
There are a few shmups (Tac/Scan, Star Jacker, Shoot1Up) where you control all your lives at the same time. It's pretty cool.
cosmo (@cosmo0.fr) reply parent
Did you try the "tiny best set" you can find around?
cosmo (@cosmo0.fr) reply parent
There's the Astro City Mini V, but as much as I like the thing, I wouldn't call it a proper port, considering the massive input lag...
cosmo (@cosmo0.fr) reply parent
Yeah it's really good, at least as much as GG Aleste 2. It's also "cheating" in the sense that it's much larger than any other game on the system, since they don't have to take rom chip cost into account.
Sean Jordan, Video Game Researcher (@greatestgames.bsky.social) reposted
So I was messing around with Compile's Aleste games last night and realized that in North America, the games were released under so many different names it's not obvious they're part of a Japanese series. So here's a quick guide to them - they are most DEFINITELY worth your time! (A thread)

It's pretty good! A Xevious-like where you bomb cracks in a space structure until it breaks, then drop down a level, until you get to the ground. youtu.be/61Lvu5ZWSpw
cosmo (@cosmo0.fr) reply parent
Star Jacker (Sega, jul 83) A variant on the Tac/Scan concept, where the player controls several ships at the same time, but in a classic vertical scrolling shmup Xevious-style, with ground and air shots. The game is simple, but fun and pretty well done. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Bgm...
cosmo (@cosmo0.fr) reply parent
Sky Lancer (Orca, jul 83) You control an astronaut falling down in the middle of the screen and can fire on the sides, so a downward-scrolling shmup. It's ugly, not fun and very repetitive. www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4vO...
cosmo (@cosmo0.fr) reply parent
SF-X (Nihon Game, jul 83) A free-movement horizontal shmup like Defender, but ugly as sin, slow, repetitive, and boring. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WEt...

I feel like what publishers took away from Baldur’s Gate’s success is that every game needs to have like 5000 hours of content, instead of the much more valuable takeaway imo: you need to let players have sex with a demon lady and a man who turns into a bear

Juno First (Konami, jul 83) A game that reproduces the aesthetic and intensity of Defender, but with a vertical scrolling, and much more simple: no base to defend, no bomb, etc. It's pretty fun still, but a bit basic. www.youtube.com/watch?v=H81t...
cosmo (@cosmo0.fr) reply parent
Battle Cruiser M-12 (Sigma, jul 83) A sort of modernized Depthcharge where you control a ship at the top dropping missiles towards the bottom. It's fine and plays well, but in 1983 you expect a bit more from shooters. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID7v...

I wish I could be like that. I'm too easily influenced and I sometimes buy a game just because I see someone say it's good. Well, the good part is I often get good surprises and play great games like that, between all the "why did I buy that"

Star Wars (Atari, may 83) One of the rare American shooters to be a hit in Japan, it reproduces the end sequence of the movie in an on-rails sequence where you move a target. It's fun but way too short, and pretty hard to control using modern pads. www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhBu...

I like to be really whiny here and claim that either the SNES is 8-bit because the 65c816 has an 8-bit external data bus or the Genesis is 32-bit because the 68000 has internal 32-bit capability (Atari actually claimed this, classic)

Even during the 16bits era the trends had shifted towards more long-form gaming, though. Even Sonic and Mario got save slots. And the best sellers list of PS1 has a lot of adventure and rpg games. I think Sega failed to recognize that with the Dreamcast and its focus on arcade ports.
cosmo (@cosmo0.fr) reply parent
Well it depends, sometimes they do. Sometimes enemies just fire more bullets and/or faster ones. Even when boss patterns add more things they are often faster as well, and it can make them unnecessarily difficult or even easier than before by creating larger gaps. But I'm not an expert lol
cosmo (@cosmo0.fr) reply parent
Most shmups change number or speed of bullets when changing difficulties but it can make the difficulty unbalanced, and completely change the feel of patterns, forcing players to learn new routes instead of just making them harder to execute.
