said, the Macs are not too bad, because they're actually not Macs any more. They're unix systems with amazing Mac emulators built in to run older software. Linux would be cheaper, but I get it.

Apple killed the Mac. They killed the shitty MacOS with unix. They have been processor promiscuous and in so doing (with Motorola) were conned by IBM into starving the 680X0 human and financial resources to evolve. The new ARM Mx Macs are expensive dongles to prevent Intel Hackintoshes. That

In computer terminology, #Sprites are hardware constructs. Most of what most of you think are "sprites" are not Sprites at all. The word is now so eroded that it means almost anything that moves onscreen. So what's the point of the term, unless we reclaim it? Not than you can convince most people
Cosmos Soup (@cosmossoup.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm inclined to agree. Frankly I'm disappointed that Carl Sagan and Mr. Spock both ever used the word "believe". In my strict constructionist view, to believe is to accept/assert something is true/real/valid without any solid concrete evidence. Interestingly, Sagan did seem to appreciate this.

Put it another way: even if their hardware wasn't first, they were the first to use the term Sprite and attach it to that kind of hardware construct. Thus Sprite refers to hardware. Had TI gone IP/TM/© wild (as would happen industry-wide in a few years) there would have been no malappropriation.
Cosmos Soup (@cosmossoup.bsky.social) reply parent
even if the hardware construct predated TI's VDP (which IMHO is irrelevant), you heard TI engineers say they coined the term Sprite. Ergo, the term itself (Sprite) refers to a kind of hardware construct they designed. Clearly the term refers to hardware. Notwithstanding common misunderstanding.
Cosmos Soup (@cosmossoup.bsky.social) reply parent
It may well be the hardware constructs appeared before TI. You're the one who kept bringing up TI. And then started running back to prior arcade games when the TI engineers said they coined the term Sprite. "Sprite" was coined there, in reference to a hardware construct (see the chip). So even if
