When do I most think about moving to an urban environment where I (almost) never need my own car? When I'm replacing my 5th or 6th tire in 2 years because of nails and screws getting into parts of tires that are in the no-fix zones... #GiveMeTransit

True. We can't just cede that ground, but it's tough when there are constituencies that demonstrably don't care. Between the "we like him because of his character" and the "our single issue is all that matters" crowds, those messages don't land and may never land. We need the non-voters to vote.

It's unlikely that we'll get good data, but one can only wonder how much more diverse and international the crowd at #RustConf 2025 might have been without the geopolitical pressures. Great folks here no matter what!
Not many clear-cut right/wrong or good/better/best distinctions in my world, but it is interesting to compare #RustConf 2024 and 2025 and #PyCon 2025 in terms of developer-focused conferences. Of course, 1 was pre-election, 1 was early T2, and 1 is now. Travel, visas, etc. have changed a lot... 🤔
And yet, people are talking seriously about pouring hundreds of billions or trillions into AI and its associated infrastructure with ... largely unpleasant ... downstream impacts. The USHUOA, United States of Heads Up Our Asses, continues its swirling course down the tubes.

[Caveat: Having been to exactly 1 infosec conference and spent way too much time in dysfunctional shops. Maybe, the real world of IT already gets it.]
Surprises suck. Being Agile is awesome unless security, audit, and/or others are on the waterfall path, brought in at the last minute or later. Want audit to be easy peasy? Bring them in. Want security to sign off? Bring them in. Want infra, service management, etc. to love your changes? Etc.
There are no #IT islands, and there can't be if devs want a pain / fear / friction-free experience. Design for security. Yay! Design for privacy. Yay! How about design for auditability? Design for discovery & mapping? Design for change management? Design to leverage infrastructure as code?
And, that was one of the wins for ObL/AQ. Whether we were ever the world's policeman exactly, we started retreating from core values out of (real and/or perceived) fear. They got to point and laugh and say they were right about us all along as the Global War on Terror ramped up... ☹️
Not exactly agreeing or disagreeing, but Bardem improves most movies he's in. Craig or no Craig, re-imagining and re-inventing Bond to try to capture some imagined zeitgeist is a losing proposition. A make-over to be more like some other character always fails. And now, no Broccolis at the helm. ☹️

Puts a whole different spin on my "I'll vote for the policy wonk" preferences, but you're not wrong. In the end / at the voting booth, a candidate being prepared and having good ideas is rarely enough to win by itself. Tough to even imagine a President Al Gore or Elizabeth Warren these days.

Strange how reading an English #grammar textbook keeps echoing both #Rust traits and the type-state design pattern in my head.
