Things like that drastically reduce the risk of just “having a go” - £15 is not a massive loss if you don’t enjoy it.
Yes - it is now very cheap and convenient to get started, eg Chinese device programmers (even the manufacturers own ones are now reasonably cheap).
Exponentially is a bit of an exaggeration, but UCs are now powerful enough that you don’t have to do anything like as much bit-banging etc. Plus there are many more libraries to choose from - you can usually find something close to what you want with little effort.

I think the political/media class are in their own TERFy bubble and aren’t really aware of how it looks to those outside of it. The UK has a real problem with bigotry & discrimination delivered politely then getting angry with any blowback (especially so if angry or delivered in the wrong accent)
