A digital illustration of Watto from Star Wars Episode I. He’s a weird blue and tan creature with a stumpy elephant trunk for a nose, pig-like tusks, a big round belly, otherwise spindly limbs, and two leathery wings. He wears a brown leather vest, some leather straps around his belly, and I regret to report, some kind of leather jockstrap/codpiece. He is reclining sensually leaning on one elbow, belly up and legs splayed out. His other hand is held out and he’s spinning his red and blue ‘chance cube’ (just a 6-sided die for making A-or-B choices) on the tip of one clawed finger. He’s giving you a very knowing and and intentional leer. A line of vaguely sci-fi type lettering across the top of the frame reads ‘Maybe it will happen today’.

Science Fiction has never been as mainstream popular and widely available as it is right now. If SF books aren't selling as well as they once did, it's only because it is so easily accessible in other forms.

Shipping update for our U.S. customers.

Dear Friends, A quick update on shipping to the U.S. (Though, given the chaos in the U.S. and elsewhere this feels rather insignificant, tbh.) For the time-being, book orders for U.S. customers will be fulfilled through Print on Demand. Some books and printed matter are still exempt from duties and tariffs under the Canada-US-Mexico Trade deal. For any U.S.-bound shipments I have to supply the HS Code, a Certificate of Origin, name and contact details of the manufacturer, and the obligatory Customs Declaration. On top of that, some shipping partners have added brokerage fees to clear items through customs. Even with all that, whole truckloads of packages bound for the U.S. have been turned around at the border as officials on both sides try to figure out who is responsible for collecting duties and taxes. This leads to more costly delays. For our customers outside Canada, a book ordered direct from us won't come with any extras like bookmarks, etc. But your POD book will be no different than if you ordered a copy online via Barnes & Noble, or Amazon, etc. If there is any issue with your order, please do get in touch and we will fix it. We're sorry it's come to this, and thank you for your understanding and on-going support. -Michael

...it was the only way they could afford a child, and they are well off (not on basic). The Mormons built their generation ship to get away from the restrictions. Pregnancy is rare enough that there's a specialized sex trade involving illegally pregnant women. There are more examples.

I've been thinking about it more, and honestly it's really weird. But I suspect that the line you're thinking of is actually Martian propaganda/misrepresentation. The reason it's really weird is that Earth as depicted as having really effective birth restrictions. Holden has 8 parents because...

I'll admit that my enjoyment of the series benefits from not understanding the mechanisms I have been told exist that will eventually slow or stop human population growth, beyond the fact that at some point the planet won't be able to sustain us. Which supports your main point.

But the overcrowded Earth is mostly (imo) a justification for including the classic colonization of Mars and the belt, and is used to set up cultural conflict and misunderstandings. I don't think there's any more explanation for it than "Earth's population keeps growing, why wouldn't it?"

I don't disagree that they handwaved massive population, but I don't read basic support as the causal justification. If anything, I'd say it's the reverse. They also have mentioned (outside the books) that the basic support presented in the books is explicitly not UBI, it's a terrible alternative.

So, I was editing one of my novels today, it turns out that I start a lot of sentences with conjunctions. And I edited most of them to make them the first sentence of a new paragraph.

And it seems lots of people think it's bad to start a sentence with a conjunction. But I don't care. Because I'm going to do it anyway.

It's over - The Polari Prize has been halted for 2025. Sunk by the decision to longlist a proudly anti-trans author. Credit to the other longlisted authors who were willing to sacrifice award nomination to instead stand in solidarity with their community. This really meant something.

Polari is part of the LGBTQ+ writing and reading community and for fifteen years, trans, gender non-conforming and non-binary people have been part of that community - at our events, on our judging panels, on our long and short lists and among our prize winners. This commitment to inclusion remains unchanged. Polari is not and has never been a trans exclusionary organisation. These are not our values and we condemn all forms of transphobia. What was supposed to be a celebration of exceptional LGBTQ+ literature has been overshadowed by hurt and anger, which has been painful and distressing for all concerned and we apologize to everyone who has been affected. Many discussions have been undertaken over the last two weeks -with authors, judges, stakeholders, and funders - about the impacts and ramifications of the longlisting of John Boyne's novel and how we can learn from this experience and move forwards. We have decided as a result to pause the prize this year while we increase representation of trans and gender non-conforming judges on the panels for all the awards and undertake a governance and management review to include our aims and values and work to better support everyone within our LGBTQ+ Polari community. We have already secured strong representation for next year, which we will build on. We will also explore discussions about the tensions between the claims of freedom of expression and the need to create inclusive and supportive spaces in a world hostile to our trans community members and our community at large. We extend our heartfelt apologies to everyone affected this year, for the disappointment and despair this has caused. We acknowledge the ongoing support of the Polari community, everyone we have consulted, and our hugely supportive partners. We are a tiny operation that has run on goodwill and small pots of funding and sponsorship for 15 years and will endeavour to find a way forwards in good faith. Alt in prev Alt in prev

CUPE has a message for Mark Carney, Patty Hajdu and the Liberal government: You have seriously understimated our strength, our determination. You have picked a fight with the wrong union, the wrong workers, and you have definitely picked a fight with the wrong women. #unfairCanada #UnpaidWorkWontFly
