Craig (@craigtime.bsky.social) reply parent
And the part where the 13th amendment says slavery is legal as long as the slave is a prisoner? That's, uh, that's a typo. The prisoners being used as slaves in a country where slavery is legal shouldn't be called slaves, for some reason

What reasoning? You're just making some weird argument that an unnecessary luxury shouldn't be subject to VAT because most super rich people don't use it (no citation). I bought some cheap beer today that most super rich people probably don't buy. Should that also have been VAT-exempt?
Craig (@craigtime.bsky.social) reply parent
I didn't use the word "rich" at all. I earn considerably over median income and I am not rich. I could not send my son Tuggy to private school even if his useless vile self deserved it. The second half of your comment appears to be talking about some other irrelevant shit that I don't care about.
Craig (@craigtime.bsky.social) reply parent
That's a strange way to phrase "87.5% of private school families earn above median income", which isn't really a statistic I would rely on to argue that private school is some kind of egalitarian enterprise.

Sorry, a product should be allowed to tell people to kill themselves because other people sometimes do that too? Is that the logic we're going with? Other people can murder you, shall we just take safety warnings off of anything that poses a health risk?
Craig (@craigtime.bsky.social) reply parent
If this is what the product can demonstrably lead to, the product isn't safe for public use and they shouldn't be pouring billions into operating it. Where's the safety manual? Where's the "read me" guidance that you have to go over before using it? Where's the concept of corporate responsibility?

Yeah to be honest this has me questioning whether to keep using it. I was thinking of it as automated resolution increase followed by the actual artistic work being done by a human, but there's clearly more of a typical generative "art" aspect than I appreciated or am wholly comfortable with

Confirming my biases so happy to believe you! Seemed like a very plausible "OR" but neither point stands on its own meri
Craig (@craigtime.bsky.social) reply parent
Yeah I can respect that I guess. I'm as surprised as anyone that after 20 years of refusing to use texture replacers I quite liked this one, and didn't realise AI was used until after I'd started playing with it. And I still avoid any other AI art mods lol
Craig (@craigtime.bsky.social) reply parent
Definitely agree it will never do a better job - I guess what I'm trying to understand is whether, if used as an efficiency tool and with heavy human input and oversight: a) the end result can be the same high quality the artist would produce; AND b) it actually does save time overall
Craig (@craigtime.bsky.social) reply parent
At the same time when people in areas I *do* understand tell me it makes them work more efficiently I regard that with a great deal of scepticism. Personally I'd rather nobody use it for art at all, but I don't know enough to tell people that *with limited careful use* it's not a valid tool
Craig (@craigtime.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd certainly be interested in knowing how much time it actually saved at the end of the day, for sure. Fairly clear that it can't produce worthwhile results unless used as an aid by an actual artist - but if they're telling me it helps them work quicker I can't really say "no it doesn't".
Craig (@craigtime.bsky.social) reply parent
Okay? Sorry? You responded to me talking about something so I posted the thing I was talking about?
Craig (@craigtime.bsky.social) reply parent
My understanding could be completely off - as mentioned I am very stupid - but to me this seems closer to e.g. Spider-Verse using machine learning to add and adjust ink outlines on characters, rather than an LLM generating new "art" from a prompt?
Craig (@craigtime.bsky.social) reply parent
We're discussing cases where there is human judgement at every step, though, as compared to terrible situations like the GTA upscales where there was no such thing.
Craig (@craigtime.bsky.social) reply parent
By the creator's own account they spent a lot of time and effort manually cleaning up a great many of the textures and making manual edits, so I was admittedly likely wrong when I said 90%. You certainly won't get good results blindly feeding .dds files into an imagine scaler
Craig (@craigtime.bsky.social) reply parent
The specifics ( esrgan.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ ) are frankly beyond me and I'm very stupid, all I know is that *with* careful human oversight of both the input and output, it demonstrably works - it just automates some tedious parts. The result is just a higher res version of the same art.

This was so frustrating because texture upscaling is a case which AI *should* be useful for doing 90% of the grunt work, it just needs a human to review and fix the remaining 10%. Morrowind has tex upscale mods that do this and they're incredible, why can't Rockstar do what a modder does for free?
