I live in Los Angeles now, but when asked where I was from, I had no issues admitting I was from Ohio. Now -- not so much. I know someone from Berchtesgaden, and they WON'T tell anyone but their closest friends that. Now I get it.

As a Californian, I can finally vote on something that has a major national impact, and it really does matter if I vote. (I'm being silly in the fact that as a Californian my vote has less weight than othet states.)

We rarely ate out as kids. Large family, poor parents, and lived in the middle of nowhere. When we did the 1.5-hour trek to a mall, we went to Ponderosa or Olive Garden afterward. Despite having the privilege to travel and living in a food diverse city (LA), I still hold fond memories of them.

My wife grew up in Munich and honestly thinks American Suburban kids are in gilded cages. Basically kids roam free and it's perfectly safe and fine. They take the trains and explore.
When I moved to LA and someone said I could take the Subway - the Purple Line (now D) - from downtown to Koreatown I thought they were pulling my leg. I was like, "LA doesn't have a subway!"
Also when we took friends to Dan Sung Sa and was going to be a 2-hour wait I told them to go here to get something to hold them over until we got in.
That specific building has switched hands a few time. It was a dumpling place, then a chicken sandwich place and now Spam Masubi. I think it fits pretty well with the tastes of the community and not something you can get at other places here (in K-Town).

I honestly prefer the, "leave you alone" approach. I like the Korean places here in Koreatown (LA) that have the doorbell thing. That's honestly the best. You ask for service when you need, don't need to hope the waiter sees you. And they leave you alone otherwise.

There is someone who does talks at Pax East on Game Design (Rym DeCoster) and he talked about the phenomenon. He could beat his friends at Air Hockey but once he tried to compete competitively he realized there was a HUGE skill gap. I never fell in that trap since I am so bad at Air Hockey.

In the end we have driven over the weekend. Same with Science center and other locations near stations. The time math makes driving make more sense even though I hate driving. What makes your standard German city's subway usable is the time between trains is very short.
The every 20 minute thing is annoying. We have had opportunities to take the train to places over the weekend but 20 minutes is silly. An example, we went to see a movie at alamo draft house. If we time it, it's honestly about the same door to door. But if we mess up timing it isn't.

Sorry to Colombo this. But the constant security guards on the B line made it so that my wife feels safe coming home at night from the Hollywood Bowl - the activity at the Hollywood station and the constant guards there make her feel safe.
Yes, I never once felt threatened, but often the tents take over the side walks to the point that I have to walk in the streets. I often have to tip tow around broken glass, or my least favorite, watching people just drop trow to piddle or change clothes.
We obviously want to treat people with respect and compassion, but it's also an experience you want to avoid. I often wonder if those that shrug off homelessness actually live in areas that have it? When I go to the library I take Wilshire instead of 7th street because 7th st has "Urban Campers"
When we walk to the Wilshire/Western mall (Called MaDang Courtyard according to Google), the bus stop on Western (by the Pierce National building) is always sketch. It has that mix of homeless yelling to no one, "I told him to fuck himself" mixed with shit and rotten food smell.
Sunset today (August 5th) for Madrid is 9:25PM. Philadelphia is about the same latitude of 40N and its' sunset is 8:09PM. I live farther south in Los Angeles and the sunset is 7:50PM. I always found the later sunsets in most European countries to be a bit brain breaking.
I know when we go to Spain, we should be with the locals when we eat, sorry but 10PM is too damn late (even 8:30PM). Our Spanish friends make fun of tourist liking tapas so much. I think it's because that's what good food is available when we want to eat.
