And so it begins. Happy start of the Fall 2025 semester (with some local wisdom)! 🐊Highlight of the day: Discovering the UF Pan-Hellenic Council circle and reflecting on my family’s Divine 9 legacy. Also saw few other views that captured my attention during my post-lunch walk.
I really enjoyed #ICA2025 this year. Catching up with my academic peers and mentors 🤗, presenting my research 👨🏾🏫, winning an Outstanding Dissertation award 🌟, connecting with my UF College of Journalism and Communications colleagues 🐊, and catching glimpses of Denver. Very fulfilling 😊

I caught myself explaining something real thoughtful to a grad student today. I couldn’t believe I was saying something so smart with such confidence. It was damn near an out-of-body experience. I was witnessing myself explain something using logic I learned in grad school 😂🤓

My non-academic friends were fixated on this question. If you have a topic you’re passionate about and rich data to explain and analyze, you’ll likely find yourself setting a page limit. Mine was 25 per chapter. I defended last summer (PhD in Communication), and my page count came in at 267.

I, too, noticed the strong Harris ground game when I was in Philly last week. Harris and dems have been strong on the ground in this part of FL. The exception—a handful of white bros hanging and parading Trump flags. No conversations. Just demanding to “take American back.”

The Only Academic Phrasebook You’ll Even Need helped me understand academic terms and phrases, and Turabian’s A Manual for Writers (Ninth Edition) helped me write my thesis proposal and dissertation.
On Writing Well by W. Zinsser and Several Short Sentences About Writing by V. Knlinkenborg. While not strictly academic texts, these really helped me stylistically in grad school.

Using media entertainment revenue to pay for public communication and other social services 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾 Even narrowing this loophole to support public goods would be great! Now we just need a good case study to materialize 🙏🏾
Most people don’t consider digital goods and services as a local or state jurisdictional issue. We found some states collecting “communications taxes” from streaming platforms, but they vary state-to-state and there’s no clear understanding of how the $$ is used 🤷🏾♂️

PEG access TV has a long tradition of providing electronic bulletin board services via local cable channels. But print-on-wall versions in access media centers like PhillyCAM are also used much by community members.
It has taken a full week of not monitoring emails and working anxiously in between meetings and events to finally feel like I’m recharging 😊💫
