I'm a bit biased, but the Lakeview Orchestra is a really great group! Good rep, good players, good culture (grew out of the Lakeview Pride orchestra a while ago), and really dedicated to no mandatory dues / not having big financial barrier to entry.

I know this might be a bit of a bit, but earnestly, there are a some really good community orchestras in the Chicago area. A string player with a music degree in their past would likely be able to audition into one of them if you're looking to dip your toe back into performing classical music.
