The President of the United States just essentially declared a war on Chicago because — wait for it! — Black and Brown people live here. This is not normal. This is not okay. And we are going to fucking fight back.

A TruthSocial post from Donald Trump, featuring an AI generated image of him in front of Chicago burning and under invasion with the words “Chipocalypse Now” near him stylized like the poster for the film Apocalypse Now. The text accompanying the post reads “‘I love the smell of deportations in the morning…’ Chicago about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR 🚁🚁🚁”

yes but again, this is like every single western government, everything is defined by how much people think the current govt sucks. far right parties offer a people a new answer. they also get voted out, even if they later get voted back in (see: US)

*meaningful* change is the key here. Biden strengthened things structurally, but as he said he would do, nothing fundamentally changed. I do think social media plays a part in it, but that doesn’t change the fact the fed govt has done nothing the average person would understand since Obamacare

realize is probably the wrong word honestly. but Americans *feel* it. they just don't always know how to identify it or how to channel it. they haven't re-elected a president since 2012 and flip-flop Congress every election (a trend I suspect will continue until meaningful change occurs)

A 1992 NYT article, “The Youngest, Cruelest Justice,” on Thomas joining Scalia in a 7-2 dissent that guards beating an inmate until he had loose teeth and a broken dental plate was not cruel and unusual punishment. It noted that Thomas backers suggested his childhood hardship would give him empathy.

Only four months after taking his oath as a Justice, Clarence Thomas finds himself rebuked by a seven-member majority of the Rehnquist Court for disregarding humane standards of decency. The withering reprimand, included in the Supreme Court's majority opinion in a prison case Tuesday, is this: To deny, as the dissent does, the difference between punching a prisoner in the face and serving him unappetizing food is to ignore the concepts of dignity, civilized standards, humanity, and decency that animate the Eighth Amendment. The Eighth Amendment forbids cruel and unusual punishments. Only Justices Thomas and Antonin Scalia refused to apply it to the case of Keith Hudson, a Louisiana prisoner who was shackled and beaten by two guards while their supervisor watched, warning them only against having The two dissenters likened the case to prisoner gripes about inconveniences behind bars. They contended that since the prisoner suffered only a split lip, loosened teeth and a broken dental plate, he had no constitutional complaint. They chided Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's majority opinion for turning the Bill of Rights into The Thomas dissent would be alarming coming from any justice. Coming from him, it rings also with crashing disappointment. He is, for one thing, the youngest Justice. He might well serve until the year 2030 or beyond. Although his voting record now is identical only to that of Justice Scalia, he could attract enough support from future appointees to move the Court still further to the right. A second disappointment concerns hope. Justice Thomas rose from poverty and discrimination in Pin Point, Ga., and his nomination won support from prominent people sure he would bring to the Court the understanding bred of hardship. Indeed, he testified poignantly about watching busloads of prisoners from his window.

It’s bad that Trump thinks he got elected Boss of America and the whole government is just his staff, but it’s much worse that a majority of the Supreme Court and the leaders of both chambers of Congress agree

all of the Supreme Court’s jurisprudence about executive power - all of it - can be replaced with a simple flow chart. is the president a Republican? if so it’s ok. if not, it’s presumptively not ok.

I sound insane yet saying a man who would’ve finished his term at 86 is fine is not? I’m not saying old people can’t win elections - I’m saying those widely and accurately perceived as old, on the presidential ticket. if he was on the ticket he was losing VA, NM, etc - that’s why he dropped out!

there has never been an 82 year old incumbent. that is a very simple reality and it could no longer be hidden after the debate. Joe Biden in 2024 was not Joe Biden in 2020, and he told voters as such in 2020! he overplayed his hand and showed himself to be a selfish egomaniac

and *even if* you believe these things, like most Dems did until the debate, the debate itself was such a nightmare scenario that was not sustainable to continue his candidacy. almost all Dems even continued to support him publicly up until he withdrew!

“personal ratings and incumbency advantage” does not matter. I’m sorry to tell you this. approval was bad, polling was abysmal. Harris improved on all of these things and still lost. Biden was going to be on the ticket in some form either way but Harris was actually capable of running a campaign

Biden never had a positive approval rating after his first 6 months and it never meaningfully went up until after he dropped out

it was very, very well established that Biden was not a “well-liked” president, nor was he physically or mentally capable of being president of the United States until age 86 I didn’t say his reasons were right, but he *was* right

imagine writing this completely uncritically as if it’s a normal thing for a government official to say

Florida’s attorney general, James Uthmeier, a Trump ally who has pushed to build the detention center in the Everglades, has said the state will not need to invest much in security because the area is surrounded by dangerous wildlife, including alligators and pythons. A spokesperson for the attorney general said work on the new facility started on Monday morning.
