In conclusion, America is a land of contrasts

Bluesky discourse is often inflected with a kind of well-meaning progressive hypersensitivity that can sometimes border on sex-negative, but then you'll hit refresh on the discover tab and get hit with the RUDEST hentai you've ever seen in your life

Morrison's one of the all-time bests to ever carry the baton in this serialized, super-storytelling relay, but their technique is so instinctive and original, it can occasionally confuse the next runner on the team into taking the handoff, then just bolting backwards around the goddamn track.

To this, I can relate

I think whether or not it was literally the first manifestation of the trope is secondary to it being the instance in the one graphic novel that every single comic creator in the 90s had reliably read
Dan Schkade (@danschkade.bsky.social) reply parent
See?? I'm sayin
Dan Schkade (@danschkade.bsky.social) reply parent
I believe the modern version would be... the hero reemerging from an absence with a beard
Dan Schkade (@danschkade.bsky.social) reply parent
Very true, which its imitators usually failed to realize.
Dan Schkade (@danschkade.bsky.social) reply parent
These suits always have SOMETHING going for them, but invariably fail to cohere
Dan Schkade (@danschkade.bsky.social) reply parent
I think the power suit from THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS is what really kicked off this trope, up to and including being ugly as sin
Dan Schkade (@danschkade.bsky.social)
There was a cape comic trope, fairly short-lived in the grand scheme of things, where the hero would show up in an unbelievably ugly armored suit and you knew shit was about to get REAL
Dan Schkade (@danschkade.bsky.social)

All three are my doing, although Bok and Velle's respective people, the Dragonmen and the Shark Men, are original 1934 Alex Raymond creations, and Adrane is not the first time in FG history that Vultan's had a daughter. Although I do think the illegitimate daughter angle is a new one with me.

Just realized that I should explain the book: it's a real-world thriller with two park rangers being chased by armed killers through a cave system. The one edge they have is that Wesley Fischer is the only practicing and experienced caver.

"Not even in the face of Armageddon. Never compromise" is great writing, and the voice floating at the end is perfect visually. "Joking, of course" kills me the most. It's so good, a perfect sketch of the outline of the Rorshach character. He'd solve the trolley problem by strangling the operator. 🧵

Hopefully he gave her a more nuanced breakdown off camera, with whiteboards and such
Dan Schkade (@danschkade.bsky.social) reply parent
It's GREAT looking comics, and Kurtzman's stories are wild. They reel wildly from fairly grounded space thrillers to feeling like The Hobbit with semiautomatics

Your Monday FLASH GORDON ⚔️

A real nice nuts-and-bolts look at the different cinematic Lois Lanes, a character who really does decide the quality of a Superman story. Points for avoiding the "but what does this mean for the culture" scope-broadening these things can sometimes drown in.

I thought this one was really well done. Not smooth so much as rich, a sharpening of depth and texture — none of that quasi-ai warping and cloning
