The 4CD Aretha Atlantic Records is so much part of my life that I get confused when I listen to the streaming versions because they are out of order. They are not (as they are based on the actual albums) but between 1993 and 2023, it was literally the soundtrack to my life. I bought the set twice.
Aretha was an icon and still somehow under appreciated. I read a story once about a misguided audio engineer who added a compressor to Aretha’s vocals while recording her. It’s standard for most vocalists but Aretha was…Aretha. She reportedly glared at him and said “I’m my *own* compressor”. 🫣
