That's where you get hyperinflation. Fascist regimes are especially prone to it. But we've got a long way to go before we get there, and plenty of space to recover as long as we don't cross that line. This is also not unique to capitalism. Any monetary system has the same core elements.
Caliban Darklock (@darklock.com) reply parent
Fascism does this all the time, assigning arbitrary value to things that don't actually have that much value, saying things are assets when they are in fact liabilities. The danger is that they will print CURRENCY backed by the money that isn't backed by value, which requires severe corrections.
Caliban Darklock (@darklock.com) reply parent
There is no way in hell that the current state of AI is worth what has been invested in it, let alone how it is being valued, and that's not changing anytime soon. All that money is fake, and it's going to disappear once people realise the value isn't there.
Caliban Darklock (@darklock.com)
This is based on a fundamental misunderstanding: money is a proxy for value. When the economy speculates value where it doesn't exist, money appears that isn't real. When the value proves to be false, it evaporates. This happens all the time, most obviously in the AI field at present.

Isekai where the protagonist has come from a world exactly like the new one, but now becomes heroic and celebrated simply because being from another world gives him access to opportunities he didn't have in his own.
Caliban Darklock (@darklock.com) reply parent
Even when we have the technical pillars of the new system, societal adjustment is not going to be trivial and people are going to try and use them to game the old system.
Caliban Darklock (@darklock.com) reply parent
The important thing is that we would stop having HUNGRY people. There would be food for everyone. Clothes for everyone. Our big problem would continue to be housing. And before we even get there, we have to somehow break the seal on the system so it's accessible to everyone and can't be hoarded.
Caliban Darklock (@darklock.com) reply parent
A lot of people think the post-scarcity society will flip the wealth narrative, making the poor wealthy and the wealthy poor, but the wealthy mostly don't have physical commodified wealth. If the value of gold went to zero most of them wouldn't care.
Caliban Darklock (@darklock.com) reply parent
Unlimited free energy is, incidentally, the first pillar of the Star Trek future. The second pillar is effective AI. And the third is replicator technology. With those three things we can have a post-scarcity society. A lot of the AI problem right now is we simply don't have the energy for it.
Caliban Darklock (@darklock.com) reply parent
But if we can improve our ability to generate power from wind, water, and solar, we can put more of our spaces on that power. And if we improve our ability to move that power around, we can put even MORE of them on it. And we're very close to a tipping point where fossil fuels lose.
Caliban Darklock (@darklock.com) reply parent
Fossil fuels are objectively the most cost-effective way to do that. A truckload of coal will produce more energy when burned than a truckload of almost anything else, and poses less of a risk in an accident than anything that would be better. It's literally the correct middle ground right now.
Caliban Darklock (@darklock.com)
The problem with giving the world unlimited free energy is the problem of taking the energy from point A to point B which is excessively lossy and expensive. I used to say "why don't we just fill the Mojave with solar panels" and it's because you need to move the electricity to where the people are

I am still missing some pieces (texture and layering, in particular) but when you only have some of the pieces you can fake it by doing work that doesn't need so much of the ones you're missing. Just don't forget you still need the missing pieces.
Caliban Darklock (@darklock.com) reply parent
All of these fundamentals are important and you can't skip or neglect any of them. If you try, you will struggle until you finally pick up enough of the missing ones to "click" and then you will think that last little bit was some kind of secret. It's not. It's just the piece you were missing.
Caliban Darklock (@darklock.com) reply parent
And composition can be divided into FLOW, CONSTRUCTION, and LAYERING. We typically think of these in terms of bodies: gesture, anatomy, and drapery. But that's just a specific case of the generalities that things move, and complex shapes are made of simple ones, and objects layer over other objects.
Caliban Darklock (@darklock.com) reply parent
For lighting, you need to understand how VALUE, COLOUR, and TEXTURE combine to again trick the viewer's eye into thinking they are looking at light hitting a physical object. Again, nothing can be skipped. Everything is important.
Caliban Darklock (@darklock.com) reply parent
For perspective, you need to know how to use LINE, SHAPE, and FORM in a 2D space to convincingly represent 3D objects. You cannot skip any of these. They are all important. And assembling them into a coherent whole is the overarching PERSPECTIVE fundamental.
