When I was a kid, 'Junk Sculpture' involved grabbing anything from the nearest bin and taping it together. ๐Ÿ˜† I've learnt a lot in the intervening years, but the principle remains the same. www.darrellwakelam.com #edusky

If you spark creativity in a child, who knows where that might lead them. Every creative adult can trace their career back to that one time in childhood where something just clicked. One success, one word of encouragement, one opportunity. ๐Ÿ™‚ www.darrellwakelam.com #edusky #art #3DART #artteacher

I think that was pretty common, I was very lucky, even though no-one in my immediate family was even vaguely creative, they saw it as a possible 'escape' for me in many ways, and it was, and still is. x

I had a fabulous day at Lyme Regis Museum today, where over 150 kids came along to make wax-resist ammonites. Mums, dads, teens, and younger kids joined in, but as usual it was the under 7's who showed us how it's done. Two of the pieces here were done by under 5's. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ #edusky www.darrellwakelam.com

Today's wax-resist ammonites, created by visiting children at Lyme Regis Museum in Dorset. The photo shows my examples (at the top) then a small selection of work created by some of the children at the bottom. Wax-resist is a process where you use wax (in this case crayons) to create an outline or pattern, then you use water-based paints to colour it. The water cannot adhere to the wax, so the outlines stay, and the paint fills around them.

Iโ€™ve had a fabulous day working for the lovely folks at West Bay Discovery Centre. Weโ€™ve been at the Salt House making โ€˜bathing beautiesโ€™ ๐Ÿ˜ Over 80 children of all ages have joined us, escaping the showers in order to get creative. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ www.darrellwakelam.com #edusky

Just a few of the 80+ 'bathers' made by the children who popped into our drop-in workshop in West Bay today. The work was inspired by the West Bay Visitor Centre's latest exhibition, and the children made models of bathers from any time in history, they could be modern, or go back as far as the Victorian era.

A fish made from a recycled paper cup. This shows various images of one of my recent making projects. The original paper cup, a 'clown fish, I've made from recycling it, and me holding the finished model.

Giant burgers! Sadly, they taste just like cardboard. ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜ฌ I'm currently editing photos from last term and this was a really memorable project. The Year 8 kids from the Taunton School made these, with just cardboard and a few of my building techniques. ๐Ÿ‘ www.darrellwakelam.com #edusky

Art is always a great link up with science, in years past artists 'were' scientists, and scientists had to be artists, so it always works well.

It's lovely to look back sometimes. We did these in just 4 days, it was the end of a project for the kids, they'd learned loads and been on a trip to the Space Centre in Leicester, so they were very fired up. The 'learning' involved is far greater than the sum of what you can see here, I was amazed.

Going back through this year's photos allows me to edit and file work so I can locate it, but it also reminds me of some of the stand-out projects. The Year 5's from Summerhill Primary did this in January. I remember how excited they were by the topic. ๐Ÿ˜ www.darrellwakelam.com #edusky
