I agree, the social commentary aspect of Trek has taken a backseat in favour of trying to be clever with all the callbacks & legacy characters appearing all the time. I'm not sure what genre they were going for last week. If anyone figures it out let me know. The musical episode didn't work for me
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
They popped up on my feed a wee while back and I've been watching ever since. Occasionally I question the result but on the whole they are pretty good. I'm personally waiting for him to do the battle of Azati Prime with the NX-01 😁
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
The longer this show goes on the more it's becoming a parody. The characters are becoming more and more caricatures of themselves. That worked well on Lower Decks but even there you could find some genuine lessons and themes. The Star Trek moment Chris looks for was there. SNW is just gimmicky.

Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
It probably is a choice, however it's a poorly thought out one which doesn't fit with her character. Ignoring the fact she lives 200yrs in the future she spent her formative yrs on a colony world and then Vulcan. It wouldn't make sense for that to be her speech pattern.

It is a bit of a slow burner. The first book starts off as one story and you OK so it's gonna be that type of story, but then it goes a different way and you to recalibrate before being led down a completely different path you never knew was coming. Best thing since Arthur C. Clarke!

Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
There was that's true. There was also a lot of high calibre stuff. Given that SNW has less episodes per season it has less leeway when it comes to clangers. I don't think it's ratio of poor to good is where it needs to be. I take your point about HBO but I'd put TNG etc up against GoT all day long!
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
Given how strong Vulcan emotions are, even the mental discipline that our heroes have been trained to have wouldn't be enough to contain them.
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
I disagree. Trek has been prestige. It just wasn't taken seriously by the industry. TNG was a phenomen back in the day! It was the highest syndicate show on TV.
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
The episode also failed to understand that the emotional control of Vulcans take years of mental discipline to master. They aren't born suppressing their emotions, it requires constant work. For your idea to work Pike & Co would have been overly emotional akin to Tuvok in Meld.
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm not angry, I am disappointed though. I thought I was having a conversation. I didn't realise that constituted 'going on' and 'repeating myself' There are plenty of other shows out there doing better stuff (Severance, Foundation,..) It's just such a shame to see Trek so poor in comparison ☹️
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
Hear, hear!
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
Point is Vulcans don't talk that way. Spock, Tuvok nor T'Pol. Changing the intro is a great attention to detail, I wish they'd shown more detail with the actual script!
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
Fair enough. I personally thought it was cheap and gimmicky.
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
True, but it's an easy fix to make SNW that the showrunners are either unwilling or unable to make. That's what's the most frustrating of all. Treat your subject matter with some respect and not lighthearted farce.
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
True. The whole idea of setting Disco between Enterprise and TOS was a mistake. It limits the stories that you can tell. They still made mistakes from S3 onwards too. The language used by Burnham for instance contains too many contemporary American colloquialisms which will date it.
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
They're entitled to their opinion. Doesn't mean they are right (regardless of their surname)...doesn't mean I'm right either, it's an opinion. I don't think SNW takes it's subject matter as seriously as it should do in order to go toe to toe with TNG in terms of quality of storytelling.
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
I don't understand how the IP of Trek can be so mishandled. Trek at it's best is a social commentary and shows humanity's future in a positive light. What we get however week after week is a show relying on gimmicks and legacy characters, trying to be funny but failing and ignoring canon.
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
Haven't you just contradicted your earlier statement? And if that was the intention they didn't do it very well. Anson's line delivery was so robotic it bordered on Peter Wellar in Robocop. The lore of Vulcans has been built up over decades and this episode poked fun at all of it needlessly.
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
I've some controversial thoughts on DS9 that would probably get me kicked out of the fandom 😁 Suffice it to say DS9 is a good show. Well acted, written etc but it's a bad Trek show in the Roddenberry model. Disco didn't have an identity in S1/S2. It took going to the future to find itself.
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
Legacy isn't the best granted, however I'd still put it up against the Disco ep 😉 I thought you were doing 1 per series and in that vain I would humbly offer Arena from TOS. It's longevity as an episode will dwarf anything Disco ever produced 😊
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm not denying that, however Enterprise did a far better job of portraying that than this episode of SNW did. They came off as robotic anal retentives! The new shift rotation was a ridiculous idea. Take Me Out to the Holosuite did a better job of showing the other side of Vulcans that this did.
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
I was also annoyed at the way it caricatured Vulcans. I grow weary of every week SNW tries to be a comedy, doesn't pull it off & it descends into bad farce. Where is the social commentary? Where is the high sci-fi concepts? You're right about Kirk too. Where is the man who beat the Kobayashi Maru?
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
I'm with you on Timeless Twilight & Duet Sarek, meh and no to the Disco one. My viewpoint is skewed by my recent TNG S4 rewatch but these are better Family Brothers Legacy Reunion And I can't believe it didn't occur to me sooner... Darmok

I can 'kinda' get behind owning a pistol for home defence. I can even get behind a bolt action rifle for hunting. No private citizen needs an AR15 (or equivalent), I don't care what anyone says. America needs to grow up and decide if kids lives are more important than guns.
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
I used to work 12hrs shift on a 4 on, 4 off shift rotation. We needed 4 teams to make that work, which would deplete to available numbers on duty even further (Approx 37) 2 shifts on a 12hr pattern would be insanity. Your crew would need no actual rest. You'd either be working or sleeping.
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
You need a licence to drive a car but nothing to buy an gun. That's wild to me!
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
That's very true. I don't think I'd like a constant 12hr shift rotation though. If I manage to sleep for 8hrs that leave only 4 for eating, showering, R&R. I think I'd go crazy after a while 😁 But yeah, the writers determine all 😁
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
Not to mention those 3 or 4 guys down in the bowels of the ship where that guy works on his equations. And, you're welcome 😁
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
Riker tells us in Chain of Command that the Enterprise runs a standard 3 shift rotation. That's what I based my calculations on. I took Riker's comment to indicate Starfleet ships operate on 3 shifts. I did consider a 2 shift rotation but even then it left things a bit tight.
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social)
Voyager's crew compliment is roughly 150. If we assume a standard 3 shift rotation that's 50 people per shift. The Bridge stations require around 7 personnel which leaves 43 to cover 13 other departments. I don't think that provides enough cover. You'd need a larger crew.

They also appear in the blueprints of the Enterprise-D...which I happen to have. (I have all the specs and diagrams at home) Although, aren't they in response to the probe in Star Trek IV that was sent looking to re-establish contact with humpback whales? SNW is set before this, so why is it there?

Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
Thanks Michael. I don't like being negative, however I find it increasingly difficult with the current fare we're being given. The production is superb. The sets, effects, music. The cast are brilliant. The writers however need to go and watch some actual Star Trek to know what they need to do
Stuart McIlwain (@darthemiras.bsky.social) reply parent
I'll be honest Michael I've given up on SNW. Every week it's another bad attempt at a comedy, so much so that it descends into farce. What happened to some genuinely sci-fi related drama?
