The children need you! I teach ELD in middle school in DSUSD. Tuesday, a 6th gr. boy came in and asked, “Is it true that Trump is going to deport illegals?” (Exact quote.) Many were worried about fam. Some were worried about themselves, & they are citizens. We talked & they felt better. Please help!
I then assured them that they were more protected living in California, than those living in red states. That is a Tuesday morning convo now.
This morning, a 6th grader came in and blurted out, “Mr. Sexson, is it true that Trump is going to deport illegals?” Four kids shared that they were worried about a parent. I reminded them that I voted for Harris for this reason, and others, but that most of the voters chose him.

6 million meters per year is outstanding! Running kills my knees. I am 6’4” and too cheap to buy a big enough bike. So for me, the ski erg and row erg are enough variation to reach 3 million meter this year. I took your advice and began strength training last week!
Very nice! I am focused on rowing or skiing 8,300 meters every morning before work, so I can reach 3 million by the end of the year.

Today is January 6th and no one is watching the Capitol be plundered, feces being smeared on the walls, and police officers being stabbed with American flags. Why? Because one side believes in democracy no matter what, and the other side only believes in it only when they win.
This man and a small group of capitol police officers singlehandedly saved our democracy four years ago. In November, 77 million Americans said "to hell with them" and voted for the insurrectionists. Your "Back the Blue" flags are a pathetic disgrace and your patriotism is bullsh*t.
I thought for sure that the actions by these traitors would cause them and their leader, our Prez Elect, to become politically toxic. Remember, for a VERY few hours, the republicans in Congress condemned these actions, & Trump. We must never forget that Trump encouraged this, & fanned their flames.

Middle school teacher here, in my 32nd year. Thank you for the kind words. I have no idea what other job I could do for 32 years and still enjoy it so much! (Although, I am kinda wishing we had another week off!) I’m here to offer middle school help.
I just found you, so please forgive if this is overstepping. I’m a middle school public school teacher. Working with & being around kids helps me maintain hope 4 our future. I know not all people like kids (they can be trying, for sure), but they offer a freshness to life that many adults have lost.

This is the approach I take in my middle school classes every day. ALMOST every interaction with students, regardless of their level of disrespect, is better served when my reaction is based on being kind vs trying to “save face.” *Kindness does NOT mean being a doormat, though.
We would talk to our kids & set those expectation levels together. Sometimes the bar that they set needed to be raised by us, so we would increase the goal slightly. They knew that we were going to help them achieve, or we were going to fail together. Now, one is a lawyer, the other an engineer.
Yep. We would keep them moving all day, even though we were tired, and then all watch a movie on the couch to end the time off with some family togetherness. After the movie, they would fall asleep quickly in bed, then I would stare at the ceiling, excited about going back to teach the next day.

Last night I finished “It’s Hard for Me to Live with Me,” by Rex Chapman. Excellent book. I knew a lot of the story, but the final 25% was all new to me, and worth the price of admission! Now I have begun “James,” by Percival Everett. It is fascinating, and has me thinking.

In 2024, I rowed or skied on a concept2 row erg or ski erg for a total of 2,264,167 meters (I added them up last night). Started that year at 265lbs, and finished the year at 247. I am trying to get to 225lbs this year. ( I have NO IDEA how I weighed only 195 in college!) 1st 2 workouts of 2025:

LAX to Amsterdam. 10 1/2 hours. I am 6’4”, and I paid $100 extra for the emergency row seat with longer legroom. Can’t believe I struggled with the idea, it was so worth it.
When I found out I had to go vegan for health reasons, I didn’t miss anything except hot dogs and ice cream (which were two of the big reasons I had to go vegan, lol).

Happy New Year from my wife (and me)! We expected the best from our kids, but got their agreement (usually) first. That made the journey one of teamwork and cooperation, instead of one where they had to perform and reach a level of expectation to satisfy their mom and dad.

I love this flag. This specific one. We were on top of twin peaks with our daughter and the track coach from SFSU on a college recruiting trip, when he pointed it out and said, “Ah, San Francisco. If you treat her right, she’ll take care of you!” That flag was blowing in the breeze.

Sadly, I was homophobic until I was 19. Then I stopped thinking that way. I truly have no idea what changed my mind. Now, as a teacher, I don’t allow kids to use any slurs of any type. I also don’t allow them to say, “That’s gay,” when they mean, “That’s stupid.” Doing my penance every day.
Loving, humble, excellent Christian example! I met him in ‘92. Talked to him about being on the Tonight Show. I expected him to say thanks & move on, but he continued the conversation. It was a great interaction. If there is a heaven (& I believe there is), he is there, continuing to love others.

Yes. Thank you for taking the time to explain it to me. I missed the mark this morning. I always look for ways to improve & learn. As a teacher to mostly non-white teens, I love the chance I get daily to hear their perspective on life & see their reactions to issues at school. I’m still growing.

You are correct. Like, why did they make the words “politically correct” a bad thing? That phrase was just a mealy mouthed way to say “respectful,” and they relished in the idea that they weren’t “that.” “Woke” is definitely not FROM the right wing. Thanks!
I agree that woke is the truth, or at the very least, the search for truth. I just wish that we used standard words like, “truth.” When we use the phrases the other side uses, we are playing constant defense. They will just come up with a new word to demonize us, the truth, our message, whatever.

…or into a trade that they studied. It is proving successful. I totally agree that four year college costs are too high. Our Cal state schools cost a little over 8k for tuition each year, and the UC schools cost almost 15k. Tough, but a much better value than private schools.
…two years, as long as the college kids sign a contract promising they will attend classes and earn a “C” or higher in each class for those two years. Such a great deal, and it gives them time to figure out their path, while keeping their expenses low. Then they move onto a 4-yr school…
I teach AVID in middle school. AVID is a class that gives kids without college experience in their family a roadmap to college. It is really a class that teaches kids how to think & learn, & gets them into college campuses so they can start dreaming. In CA, community colleges are free for the first
College gives kids something to work toward, that they can achieve, post high school. Kids with that goal learn more & get better grades in high school vs those who don’t. Usually, kids who don’t plan on college don’t strive for academic success in HS, & don’t learn as much as college-bound kids.

They were there through the early 2000’s. I have fond memories of sitting with my little kids watching Goofy and Mickey climb, in 2004. My daughter was cheering them on, and celebrated when they reached the top. So fun. #disneyland #matterhorn
