Both sens from NJ are “deeply concerned.” @booker.senate.gov and @kim.senate.gov, NO ONE IS LISTENING TO YOU! Please, it is time to call this out in louder, more strident language like, “This bullshit is against the law. This president doesn’t give a fuck about the constitution.”

The children need you! I teach ELD in middle school in DSUSD. Tuesday, a 6th gr. boy came in and asked, “Is it true that Trump is going to deport illegals?” (Exact quote.) Many were worried about fam. Some were worried about themselves, & they are citizens. We talked & they felt better. Please help!

I then assured them that they were more protected living in California, than those living in red states. That is a Tuesday morning convo now.

This morning, a 6th grader came in and blurted out, “Mr. Sexson, is it true that Trump is going to deport illegals?” Four kids shared that they were worried about a parent. I reminded them that I voted for Harris for this reason, and others, but that most of the voters chose him.

Happy MLK Day. Since nothing’s going on, I wanted to share this. There are too many quotes to pull out, but I’m going use this, since I am a teacher, “To sustain a healthy democracy requires citizens who have been prepared by their education system…to exercise the responsibilities of citizenship.”

Love this tie. My wife bought it for me when we went to Cedar Point in 2008. (The kids and I were on roller coasters, and she was shopping.) Today, one of my ELD kids asked me why I was such a “chill” teacher. It’s gotta be the tie, right???

6 million meters per year is outstanding! Running kills my knees. I am 6’4” and too cheap to buy a big enough bike. So for me, the ski erg and row erg are enough variation to reach 3 million meter this year. I took your advice and began strength training last week!

Very nice! I am focused on rowing or skiing 8,300 meters every morning before work, so I can reach 3 million by the end of the year.

That’s what I was talking about. I mean, it is super sad that she didn’t beat the disrespectful fear-loving candidate & his followers. Period. And it stinks that she has to be the bigger person. But…she showed her class & ability to not be affected by his hate. It may be a while, but she will win.

Today is January 6th and no one is watching the Capitol be plundered, feces being smeared on the walls, and police officers being stabbed with American flags. Why? Because one side believes in democracy no matter what, and the other side only believes in it only when they win.

This man and a small group of capitol police officers singlehandedly saved our democracy four years ago. In November, 77 million Americans said "to hell with them" and voted for the insurrectionists. Your "Back the Blue" flags are a pathetic disgrace and your patriotism is bullsh*t.
Dave Sexson (@davesexson.bsky.social)
I thought for sure that the actions by these traitors would cause them and their leader, our Prez Elect, to become politically toxic. Remember, for a VERY few hours, the republicans in Congress condemned these actions, & Trump. We must never forget that Trump encouraged this, & fanned their flames.

This is the approach I take in my middle school classes every day. ALMOST every interaction with students, regardless of their level of disrespect, is better served when my reaction is based on being kind vs trying to “save face.” *Kindness does NOT mean being a doormat, though.
Dave Sexson (@davesexson.bsky.social)
We would talk to our kids & set those expectation levels together. Sometimes the bar that they set needed to be raised by us, so we would increase the goal slightly. They knew that we were going to help them achieve, or we were going to fail together. Now, one is a lawyer, the other an engineer.
Dave Sexson (@davesexson.bsky.social)
Yep. We would keep them moving all day, even though we were tired, and then all watch a movie on the couch to end the time off with some family togetherness. After the movie, they would fall asleep quickly in bed, then I would stare at the ceiling, excited about going back to teach the next day.

Dave Sexson (@davesexson.bsky.social) reply parent
You are correct. Like, why did they make the words “politically correct” a bad thing? That phrase was just a mealy mouthed way to say “respectful,” and they relished in the idea that they weren’t “that.” “Woke” is definitely not FROM the right wing. Thanks!
Dave Sexson (@davesexson.bsky.social) reply parent
I agree that woke is the truth, or at the very least, the search for truth. I just wish that we used standard words like, “truth.” When we use the phrases the other side uses, we are playing constant defense. They will just come up with a new word to demonize us, the truth, our message, whatever.

I did say I cherry picked. I’m cherry picking the parts that tell ME how to live and treat others, not expecting others to live up to that, only me. Like I said, I fail all of the time. There are aspirational teaching from Jesus, like there are in Buddhism. I think of myself as a Zen Christian.
Dave Sexson (@davesexson.bsky.social) reply parent
Got it. He is talking about salvation. Am I picking and choosing? Sure. I’m choosing NOT to condemn those with who l I disagree, but do my best to love all & approach all with an open mind. I’m just trying to live the way Jesus told us to live, & not judge those who don’t. I fail all of the time.

Dave Sexson (@davesexson.bsky.social) reply parent
Respectfully, where did Jesus advocate burning people alive if they didn’t follow Him? I know he said those who didn’t would burn for eternity. I am not practicing the condemnation for eternity part of the red letters, but DO try to follow the unconditional love part. Way harder 4 me than judging.

College gives kids something to work toward, that they can achieve, post high school. Kids with that goal learn more & get better grades in high school vs those who don’t. Usually, kids who don’t plan on college don’t strive for academic success in HS, & don’t learn as much as college-bound kids.
