It's made folks cautious, White folks especially and they tend to over-correct and we recognize it's well-meant but it makes things weird for all of us. What brought my OG skeet on were two instances, one a news report and the other a personal experience.
We're all still learning to recognize systems of oppression and how they manifest in our every day lives from words to actions in ways that been normalized that its hard for us to wrap our heads around because it's like "since when" and because none of us want to be THAT kind of person.
Let me add some context here...racism has been so normalized that in many ways it is essentially invisible, unseen and unknown unless blatantly hateful or it's been pointed out. For example, I had no idea the word gyp was racist in nature until someone got called out on twitter years back.
Dear White People, It is okay to just say Native American. You don't have to do that weird pause thing or say it as if you're using air quotes. If you are feeling a little unsure, it is okay to ask us what term is preferable or even what tribe specifically.
For non-Natives its best to stay clear of Indian and First American unless it is an individual's preference or the formal name of a nation or organization. The last one mainly because we come from people older than America and were not considered US citizens until 1924. It's erasure two-fold IMO.
