This is amazing. See detailed story in alt-text:

A librarian, worried that TV history would be lost or rewritten, recorded everything on television 24 hours a day for 35 years on 71,000 VHS tapes. From 1979 until her death in 2012, this Philadelphia librarian and activist undertook one of the most ambitious archiving projects ever attempted: recording television broadcasts around the clock for 35 years. Marion was motivated by a deep conviction that television news formed the first draft of history, and she feared that without diligent preservation, important context and truth could be lost or rewritten. Using up to eight videotape recorders at a time, she recorded major news channels, talk shows, and local programming, diligently swapping out VHS tapes every six hours. This effort structured her entire daily life and required careful planning from her and her family. Over time, her collection ballooned to approximately 71,000 VHS tapes, totaling more than 300,000 hours of footage spanning three decades. The archive captures everything from major world events to everyday news coverage and the changing tone of TV media. After her passing, her massive collection was donated to the Internet Archive, where it's being digitized for future generations to study how history was presented on screen. Sometimes the most important work happens quietly, one tape at a time, by people who understand that history is worth preserving.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is shutting down operations after loss of federal funding:

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) announced today that it will begin an orderly wind-down of its operations following the passage of a federal rescissions package and the release of the Senate Appropriations Committee’s FY 2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-H) appropriations bill, which excludes funding for CPB for the first time in more than five decades. For nearly 60 years, CPB has carried out its Congressional mission to build and sustain a trusted public media system that informs, educates, and serves communities across the country. Through partnerships with local stations and producers, CPB has supported educational content, locally relevant journalism, emergency communications, cultural programming, and essential services for Americans in every community. “Despite the extraordinary efforts of millions of Americans who called, wrote, and petitioned Congress to preserve federal funding for CPB, we now face the difficult reality of closing our operations,” said CPB President and CEO Patricia Harrison. “CPB remains committed to fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities and supporting our partners through this transition with transparency and care.”

the most important part of this story is not that US diplomats asked if nonwhites qualify for Trump's South Africa refugee program but that Spencer Chretien--a high ranking appointee in Trump's State Department and former Associate Director of the Heritage Foundation and Project 2025--answered NO

Thank y'all for being patient! This week we talking that talk. Sometimes artists just had to get the words out plain; singing alone wasn't gonna do it. They needed to emphasize the point! For week 3 of #BlackMusicSummer, share songs where the monologue was the main feature.

What do you think of Polo Ralph Lauren for Oak Bluffs? One small gripe: the link being drawn between these HBCUs and Oak Bluffs feels a bit contrived. Both possess distinct cultural weight and don’t need to be conflated to be meaningful.
