As the dry season intensifies, elephants searching for water lose their footing in mud and can't get back up. Taita Sisal Estate provided a backhoe whilst our helicopter flew the rescue team to the remote location. With one steady pull, he was safely extracted and walked away strong.
Three-month-old Kipekee is our youngest orphan and newest foster addition. Rescued in June with sunken cheeks and no fat reserves after surviving days without milk or protection. With patience and plenty of milk, she's regaining strength. She's enjoying life at the Nursery where she's adored.

It’s heating up here in Tsavo, which means Mr Bean has entered a phase of rest and relaxation. He finds an inviting patch of shade, squeezes himself into position, and lazes the day away. Keeper Peter is kind enough to hand-deliver Bean’s bowl of milk, so as to not interrupt his zen.

Muridjo has found the perfect way to spend the afternoon hours - lying calmly as the rest of the Nairobi orphan herd eat, dust bath, and play games. A friend to all, Muridjo has started to show a more maternal side recently, spending time looking after little Wamata or our newest arrival Kipekee.
i find this image so fascinating. it is both a literal example of authoritarianism but also a second-hand reproduction of the aesthetics of other authoritarian states. it's like a simulacra of authoritarianism whose purpose is to attempt to make the simulacra real.

Ex-orphan Zongoloni was desperate to be a mum! When Murera gave birth to Mwana in 2023, Zongoloni made unsuccessful attempts to kidnap the baby. After watching Lima Lima and Sonje become mums, it was finally her turn. In April 2025, she gave birth to Zigi - a wonderful moment for our ex-orphan.

When milk bottles appear, determined Muwingu is first in line! Since graduating from Nursery in June, she's settled beautifully at Ithumba. She loves hanging with big boys and approaching wild bulls for mentorship. Muwingu's eagerness to learn will serve her well on her independence journey.

Rangers reported a snared zebra at Taita Sanctuary. Our pilot spent hours scanning hundreds of zebras to find one 2mm wire strand, then the SWT/KWS Vet Unit moved in. After a 2.5-hour chase, the skittish zebra was darted and the snare removed - preventing what could have been a lethal injury.

Ndotto is starting his rewilding path - choosing wild nights over stockades as he expands his horizons. When we rescued newborn Ndotto 11 years ago, he was the smallest elephant we'd ever seen. Exciting to watch him spread his wings, but we're delighted he stays close during dry season.

Rescued orphan rhino Chamboi is getting bigger by the day, at 23 months old he's still very much a youngster, which he reminds us daily with his playful nature. From charging around the midday mud bath to investigating every corner of Kaluku, Chamboi brings boundless energy to everything he does.
