Absolutely this. I saw it even in San Francisco, where historically low crime rates were imagined into some crime wave of lawlessness, and resulted in the gutting of some institutions that were helping lower the crime rate even further.
A decline like this would be huge news just in general. But given JUST how rapidly this drop happened makes it extra-newsworthy. Given it happened while Trump yells abt “crime!” to justify authoritarianism makes it even MORE newsworthy. Yet… mostly crickets and “ppl still think crime’s up.”
