oh and I found the account of the original video which is a DC meme account that claims it was submitted anonymously and the video was posted 20 hours ago, so yesterday afternoon.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
what
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
also uhhhhh you're not supposed to open the windows at the white house, ever, because of the sightlines from, y'know, places like this bar. I believe the window glass is bulletproof for this very reason.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com)
this is the paint all over again (which I still haven't gotten an answer on btw)
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
So what's the source on the video?
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
i'm fixated now!
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
ahhahahahah
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
100% from the VUE DC bar on the 11th floor of the Hotel Washington.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
it's the VUE Rooftop bar on the 11th floor of the Hotel Washington.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
Except the VUE DC on the 11th floor of the Hotel Washington is much taller than the treasury building and has that unobstructed view.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
From the angle, it's 100% filmed in the hotel across the way.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
The Lincoln bedroom is actually a suite, and there's a sitting room, and a bathroom in those two windows there. So the stuff is coming from the bathroom. If it was construction, they would have a trash chute.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
you can see the curve of the oval rooms when the video gets wider, which puts it on the East Side of the building.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
Oh i counted windows wrong. That's the lincoln bathroom???
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com)
Yeah, there doesn't seem to be any sourcing or dating on it, so I'm going to keep digging. It could be that this is from an entirely different day or something else.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com)
Yeah I'm questioning the veracity too, but it doesn't have the markers of AI - no glitches, no weird markings. It looks like it's probably from inside the Treasury Building next door, or the Occidental hotel.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
No way. They have maid carts and stuff like that for just this kind of thing and such events would be handled discreetly by any staff. Also the diplomat entrance is below, so there's no way staff would risk shit hitting someone or something important.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent

so that's the residence - specifically a hallway outside a bedroom on the third floor:
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
Is this for real? I legit can’t quite tell.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com)
What
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
yeah this doc is done way too soon after the events. That kid needs to grow up so more, spend time away from her mom, and develop her own sense of self outside of her mom. Like, they are codependent and badly so.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com)
so i'm watching the netflxi doc "Unknown Number" and the perpetrator's explanation is ... unhinged.

Update: I'm getting a cheap stool off marketplace and my friend is gonna help me bolt the bowl to the stool (I have a pretty nice fabric covered bowl, which is why I was upset when it was stolen).
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
That's how it is here too! I have had zero problems with my neighbors who have been here longer than i have (I've been here four years, so this will be my fifth halloween in this building). But the candy thief stuff only started in the past two years.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
I typically keep it on a stool but you know what, maybe I can get a cheap table and just glue the bowl to it.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
omg yay!!! to go along with the kitchen-themed other cats: Pepper.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
MINE DID TOO WHEN I GOT IT.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
It was so...mean-spirited??? Like, I spend my own money to try to give my neighbors a fun little treat in October because people enjoy it and this guy just...took it. Maybe I'll set out a web cam this year to try and catch them.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
They then returned it two weeks later with a sassy note about how they'd like different types of candy next time, so I'm inclined to ...not do that.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
Some of my neighbors struggle with living in communal environments and it really, really shows. Also since it's September now, I have to think about whether or not I'm putting out my candy bowl this year because last year a neighbor stole it. The whole thing.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com)
Doing laundry again and reminded (because it happened again!) of when I put up a note in the building reminding people to change their laundry out because wet laundry sitting in the machines creates a mold problem *for everyone* and one of my neighbors ripped it down and crumpled it on the ground.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com)
Yes, to be clear, I'm fully aware of this! But that's not the complaint Schatz is referencing and the way he just accepts "schools were closed" is honestly pretty telling of where he's at on that.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com)
like i guess what I'm trying to say is that we've allowed a lot of conservative voices to drive the narrative of what we all lived through and it feels like I'm being gaslit when people talk about what was open versus what was closed.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com)
Indeed, and that was a real problem! My brother worked in a nursing home and couldn't go remote, so my SIL had to get my nieces through remote school (which did happen in SD for those two months from March to mid-May). But at no point was it "closed."
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com)
Yeah people assume it was the same everywhere within the US too. South Dakota never closed down and the meat processing plant there even offered a bonus if you had good attendance (eg, incentivizing coming to work sick).
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
It depended on the state! Some did close down for much longer. *Lots more* were open again in the fall.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
it depends on the state. South Dakota *never* closed.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
Like do you just hate your kids?
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
I'm extremely tired of the "schools were closed!" The physical building, yeah, but people were still working and trying to teach your kids. You just had to deal with it more directly for like, two months.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
My friends who are teachers didn't like, get a vacation. People are upset that they had to keep their kids at home. That's what this is. Schools didn't close. They pivoted to online, and then the summer started.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com)
so hey uhhhhhhh bars stayed open because the government wanted to keep them in business and not piss off conservatives. Schools *also* stayed open in that *they were functioning* and switched to online. At no point did schools just stop teaching, to be clear.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent

Griffin’s definition of fascism as palingenetic ultranationalism—specifically a reactionary nostalgia for a lost history of the nation that never existed—remains undefeated. A nostalgia for a type of bread that is ubiquitous, created in the 20th century, and rage towards bread as old as civilisation

Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
I am saying this not as a bystander, but as someone who genuinely spent years studying Lewis, specifically taking classes on him in college (at Oxford!) and doing an independent study on his work. He is a bad theologian.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
Lewis is a bad theologian. Mere Christianity is a bad book. He's decent at translating some complex topics into layman's understanding, but he also cannot and should not substitute for actual exegetical work, and it is a mistake that we have allowed his work to be used this way.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com)
So I'm reading Rigney's The Sin of Empathy to get a better perspective on what is driving evangelicals now, and of course, he spends a fuckton of time with CS Lewis. It is a problem of evangelicalism that Lewis is viewed as some giant of theology when he was a new convert obsessed with apologetics.
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com)
Well that's cool (also ugh gay men demeaning women, of course)

Which is one of the major frustrations I have with foundation giving. The need doesn't end. We have bodies that need care and that is ongoing. Do you also get the "we only want to fund NEW things" requirements?
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
lol yeah gotta wait a couple weeks
Dex Anderson (@dexanderson.com) reply parent
I would go with services per patient because it demonstrates the need - people are looking to you as primary care, essentially, rather than a one-off, which is deeply important for donors to understand.
