Thanks for these updates; really fascinating to read. I have been involved with one investigation that led to a retraction, and the amount of time that was sucked up in this was enormous. By the committee, the institution, the journal; ugh. And that was just one 😳. Such an important issue.

Just established care at a teaching clinic, and was impressed that the intern seeing me masked 👍🏻
I mask when I see all my patients; not sure what “cost” this guy sees. A few patients who are hard of hearing need to read my lips so I remove it for them. If anyone else objects I cheerfully tell them my day is spent seeing people with known or suspected infections and I like being healthy 🤷🏻♂️
Honestly, it's so bizarre. Just go visit a transplant ward or clinic! Yes, amazing stories of perseverance and will and compassion, but also people struggling with drug toxicity, infection, cancers, and the sheer grind of the frequent visits when things aren't going well. This is not some secret 🤷♂️
Also: it is wild that heads of state are so gullible. Tech-bro billionaires? Sure. But these men have entire administrations that employ doctors and scientists that can quickly tell them that the average mortality rate a decade after transplant is ~50%.
The people (generally all men) who think they're a few organ transplants away from living to 150 have clearly never cared for a patient on the multiple immune-suppressive drugs needed for those organs to not be rejected. Turns out when you suppress your immune system, lifespan shortens. Who knew...
I get very nervous about pieces that imply “don’t worry, this big problem will melt away on its own”. Maybe it will. But maybe those homes will just be passed down through families, or be sold to investors, and still leave us with a housing crisis. Building more homes still needed, IMO

Yup; it’s so disheartening. Was volunteering at. An event 2 years ago and couldn’t stay quiet while 2 of the other volunteers talked about how bad the vaccine was; one was even hospitalized for a week with COVID pre-vaccination; told me “vaccine made me feel just as bad”. 1/2

Loon, I wasn’t arguing about who argued for churches getting to reopen and when; I was pointing out that in the place I knew best (MN), the facts were opposite what you argued: religious groups got dispensation that others did not. And it wasn’t “the doctors” that decided it 🙄

In November 2020 I as a non-religious MN person couldn’t do social gatherings, but churches were allowed indoors at 50% capacity. Was I the one having my liberty violated? I didn’t complain. Working in a hospital full of dying people made me wish people were a little more willing to help others
If I had an immune suppressed patient ask me today whether they would be safer in an indoor church or an outdoor gathering during an outbreak of any respiratory infection (Covid, flu, measles), the answer would be clear: outdoors is safer. That would not be a bad call now, nor was it then.
People who study dynamics of air exchange and outbreaks of infections actually had a pretty robust evidence base to say there was a difference. But what do I know 🤷🏻♂️

Tom is actually wrong- outdoor gatherings were only prohibited if they were confined, which had a definition in the text. A gathering of people out of the national mall for prayer or worship services was perfectly fine.

To be clear: if you are bitten by an animal whose rabies vaccination status is unknown (ie, all wild animals, and possibly some domestic ones), seek care, and suggest that the doctor speaks with the state public health department (MN’s is excellent- I call them at least once a month!)

It actually does, just not perfectly. I’ve read all the studies and know the data as an ID physician. Absolutely masking is another layer, but optimistically we’re only getting people to do that in times of high circulation
Glad you got the care you needed. Never seen so many people being sent out for care in the community before, largely because of unstaffed positions. Ultimately delays and fragments care, and costs far more. I hope the VA survives the next 3 years…

Prior approvals are ways to deny care. Full stop. They know that when they do this, some percentage of people will find it too confusing/daunting and will give up. A few will die during the delay. From a dollars and cents standpoint, both of those are “wins” 🤮 From a human standpoint: it’s immoral
Oysters are a high-risk food, especially raw. Wouldn’t eat if immune-suppressed, pregnant, or otherwise high-risk. Also (no offense to the gulf): would never eat from those warm waters (warmth = bacterial growth). I buy them weekly, and typically go for as far north as possible (WA, MA, Canada).
This chaos is the point. Is this for healthy people under age 65? Or also those with a high risk condition? And the state-by-state rules; ugh. Regardless, requiring a prescription is a barrier, both in time/hassle, and may incur extra costs.
