Was it inconvenient? Definitely! But I'd take it over the constant urgency and productivity over everything of American culture.
Spent a summer in France and was amazed by this. Every restaurant has plentiful outdoor seating. It's so community oriented, you're supposed to socialize and engage. Shops are open for way fewer hours, and people get to go home for lunch. I miss it terribly.

People are products of their environments and I have to believe that improving society would help shift mindsets away from reactionary beliefs. Powerless people with bad opinions don't deserve to die, ex: the Texas flood.
For some, I think, there is not really a sense of protecting children, but of protecting their children because they are *theirs*. Rooted in, I imagine, not viewing children as individuals but as extensions of the parent.
About a month ago I stumbled into Coyote-palooza, a big educational celebration of one of our most misunderstood neighbors. Its great to see orgs like the Portland Urban Coyote Project informing the public on the best ways to coexist with these guys!
