Honestly the inter-city stuff is kind of a distraction. What the US needs is more city-and-surrounds train networks, like NYC has. And those CAN work.

Trains used to be much, *much* more expensive. Riding the Transcontinental Railroad from Nebraska to SF (so half the US) cost something like $2,500 in today's money. It's not that trains literally *can't* work with low density, it's that they can't be competitively priced with alternatives.

Also, charging on the road is *expensive*, often nearly as much as a gas-up. (100 miles something like $2.50 at home, $6.75 on the road, $8 for gas for comprable-ish cars)

We need to talk more in terms of the electricity that gets used, which is much more fungible (though still not entirely); both for emissions reasons, and more more prosaically b/c US wholesale electricity costs are up *10%* in the last year b/c of data centers and expected to rise further

Or to put it another way: if you are making SUPERMAN (or a handful of others: Batman, Spiderman, etc) you have an opportunity that most movie writers would kill for -- you can skip over the expository setup (bc WE KNOW) and get straight to cool stuff! So, you know, DO THAT

It *particularly* helps with a story as well known as Superman's, of course, but the contrast makes obvious how big of a point of failure this is for superhero movies. The structure of "non-hero to hero" just imposes some narrative constraints that make everything too similar.
