Antimony hardens the lead and prevents shrinkage and deformation when the alloy cools from a melt in a mould to make the moveable type. It meant that high quality clear text could be repeatably printed on mass unlike previous printing that used carved wood blocks that deteriorated quickly /3

It's a furcula-filled #FossilFriday today Here's the real and complete furcula (wishbone) of Valerie, the T. rex I found back in 2022. While around 100 Tyrannosaurus specimens have been found to date, the furcula is very rare. I molded it as well so people can get copies for teaching collections 🦖🧪

Losing the JR was a huge blow. I think especially because of that an NSF budget with the Palmer cut wouldn't have happened in normal times. The Palmer was expected to continue until we were closer to getting the replacement. Now we are losing every Antarctic research ship & likely the replacement.

Mind-blowing: the Grand Canyon has a single primary water source: a fragile spring near the bottom of the canyon. Water has to be pumped up ~3K feet to the rim and gets around via an old system of "creative" pipes. Photos via the National Park Service.

The clouds cleared away for a portion of last night and the meteor cameras recorded more Perseid meteors. The first pair of images were acquired from within the city of Calgary. The second pair of images were recorded by a camera south of Calgary. Moonlight was still a factor last night.
