I don’t really have an answer, but Diner (1982) taught me to eat French fries with gravy, so it has to be in the running.
I ate there a number of times when I lived in rural Kentucky. It's… fine. Certainly a few grades higher than the fast food chains that were the other main option for "eating out". It's baffling to me that anyone would have strong feelings about the place though.
