It might be a way of killing her off. Murders happen in prison. The person who did a lot of carpentry on my house, and then was accused of murder for a drunk driving killing, was murdered in Santa Rita relatively recently. He'd not even been convicted, just was being held for trial.

Er, it may be trivial for you, but if you cool the inside of a building, you're increasing the heat outside. The hint is "heat pump". It's more clear for heating your house, since a furnace turns a source of energy gas, oil, electricity, into new heat. Power plants are heating their locations.

Apparently she told them she was going to work for her keep, and that's a red flag for immigration, both Canadian and US. It's a legitimate violation, but they've overreacted. I think many of us know a person with this problem a few years back, apparently working as a volunteer at Worldcon counts.

Pretty much. And banging on about conscripts was absurd. The US had conscription from the Civil War to Vietnam. And registration is still required in some cases, at least. And apparently Russia was conscripting for the invasion.
