Read that as “Christian Hamburglar” and now I am even more intrigued

I, over here chanting “an and E. an and E.”, fondly remember this age of A&E. Some good TV movies and miniseries, some bad ones!

Dang it, now I have to rewatch MITCHELL (MST3K).
Drew (@drewcompton.bsky.social) reply parent
That is true. Even Scarface didn’t do that much all at once.

@hotdogsladies.bsky.social I am on my New Pornographers kick again. I bought MASS ROMANTIC in the Tower Records in the Peabody Hotel in Memphis my freshman year of college. (Brag. I also ate barbecue. Also brag.) Holy smokes it all holds up. I can’t get the volume up enough to blow my ears out.
Drew (@drewcompton.bsky.social)
@thefienprint.bsky.social Dan, I am having a Sesame Street discussion with friends and have just now realized I need an essay from you about why Grover is the greatest of them all. Although I don’t know where you could possibly start.

Ha ha, I figured, but had to ask! And hey, if the shoe fits, Bear deserves that name! 😎

I must know what the E stands for, if anything!
Drew (@drewcompton.bsky.social) reply parent
I’d be interested in that. I generally hesitate to get too intrusive into any writer’s life, but sometimes it can provide some real insight (as I think it does with the later Macdonald novels). And I do need to check out Mrs. Millar’s works!
Drew (@drewcompton.bsky.social) reply parent
The Sarah Weinman read about the Millars is fascinating! (Been digging into it as I finish off the Archer novels.)
Drew (@drewcompton.bsky.social) reply parent
I think about Raymond Chandler’s description of his specific detective knight a lot. Granted, I am going insane lately reading a lot of Ross Macdonald, which is super-evocative to me. Thoughts and thoughts!
Drew (@drewcompton.bsky.social) reply parent
And by integral, that’s not to say they necessarily mean Bond is likable or should be considered so, but it all is part of who he is. I don’t know; it’s all an interesting interpretation to me, which I guess is how you read things in general.
Drew (@drewcompton.bsky.social) reply parent
Indeed, THE PERILS OF PAULINE! As far as the sexual politics of the books (and the character), how necessary do you think they are to the character? I see some readers who find it integral, others less so. I have no dog in this hunt but am curious how others might see it.

I, CLAUDIUS was the first set of DVDs I ever rented way back in my freshman year of college! (I was also reading the Graves books at the time.) I remember receiving a discount from the local rentery (not a word, but it is now) because the cashier said (1) it was “old as hell” and (2) “awesome.”
Drew (@drewcompton.bsky.social) reply parent
Ah, just to think I could have been lazy for one more day! 😅

Hamlet likely stole it, if it’s any consolation. He also goes to bed when he hears the PERRY MASON music (“Park Avenue Beat”! What a great piece!), so there are many things I cannot explain.
Drew (@drewcompton.bsky.social)
@sarahweinman.com Sarah! My searches paid off and I finally found your piece about the Millars! I think it’s important for many reasons, only one of them being the insight it lends to the Macdonald novels (which is helpful for me as a reader currently reading them!). I’m glad you wrote it.
Drew (@drewcompton.bsky.social)
I wonder if THE INSTANT ENEMY isn’t Ross Macdonald’s most brutal Archer novel. #books

I personally think a hot dog may be a taco (for secret reasons)! None of this is relevant to anyone’s taste buds, as both are delicious!

Now my question is whether a taco is a sandwich, although I suspect the answer is much like your answer to the (in)famous hot dog sandwich question. 🤔
Drew (@drewcompton.bsky.social) reply parent
My grandmother ALSO did not batter her chicken. I have the sneaking suspicion she did not do so because (1) works fine for a one-meal dinner just to use flour! And (2) while tasty, not her signature dish. Secret (3): make the other neighbors do the work for potlucks and take the leftovers! 😎
Drew (@drewcompton.bsky.social) reply parent
Since we’re neighbors and all! Although I did just spell it “Missippians” because that’s how I say it, but I regret nothing. I was once asked (it was not an insult) if I was Irish when I worked retail and I realized then I probably watched too much TV when I was a kid to not have the accent.

I think of hamburgers (cheeseburgers, etc.) as the ultimate fast food, but fried chicken to go was always the one that blew my parents’ minds when they were younger since you could make it last for days and eat it cold and didn’t have to fry it yourself. It’s an interesting generational gap!

@briancgrubb.bsky.social Sunflower seed heist and honestly a ballpark is a perfect spot The witnesses are all on your side, no one loses anything but seeds and everyone will gladly hand them over “Give me the seeds and I give you back the ability to play ball” “Also look at this glorious tail”

I don’t think James Mason ever really got the respect he deserved, but ODD MAN OUT contains such an excellent performance. I think Robert Newton is great in it too, but that man CREATED the pirate in TREASURE ISLAND. So, yeah, all them people were doing good work. 🙂

One cool thing about squirrels—apart from their awesome tails—is their general agility. Weak branch, no problem. Fall to the ground, no problem. Stare you down in a city park, no problem. Bird feeder, no problem at all.

@patrickzircher.bsky.social Patch! I finally gave up on my book search (lost somewhere around in this house for reasons) and broke down and bought a new copy of BRIDGMAN’S LIFE DRAWING (RIP my old copy). Do you have any other specific Bridgman books you find particularly enlightening?
