Nice paper, but disagree a bit on framing. “Our estimate of 96.9 Gt carbon sequestration potential…amounts to 17.6% of the 640 Gt of carbon emissions since 1750.” This may be smaller than other estimates but that’s still a lot of carbon!!! Much more than I’d expect from DAC this century!

Based on some quick math, this alone could fund the NSF Plant Genome Research Program for ~4 years; the NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Biology, which was totally axed in the NSF budget request, for ~9 years; and ~ half the total NSF GRFP budget

A closer look to figure out what this means for atmos chemists: -GEO is cut by 45%, but includes a 75.1% cut to research (buffered by smaller cuts to infrastructure) -NCAR gets a 39.7% cut with focus moving to ‘weather & earth system models’ and research to better understand wildfire evolution

We have NASA's proposed budget for FY26, and it is brutal to science. Earth science would be cut by more than half. Astrophysics (like JWST, Hubble) by nearly two-thirds. Full details at www.nasa.gov/fy-2026-budg...

We trained a separate machine learning algorithm to create a synthetic training set, covering this pre-2015 period so that we can create our full 2011-2022 maps. Our synthetic PM2.5 compares very well to a small network of observations in Seoul, which we don't use in training.
Drew Pendergrass (@drewpendergrass.bsky.social) reply parent
One neat thing we tried: South Korea only began measuring PM2.5 in 2015. This is tricky with machine learning, because missing data can lead to big biases. However, the environmental ministry did measure other pollutants (including coarser PM10) which correlate closely with PM2.5.
Drew Pendergrass (@drewpendergrass.bsky.social) reply parent
To give you a sense of what this dataset adds, here is a map of Seoul during an extreme pollution event in May 2016. Many areas outside the city center have no nearby observations, but this tool can help fill the gaps.
Drew Pendergrass (@drewpendergrass.bsky.social) reply parent
PM2.5 is the number one environmental cause of death. Fortunately, governments in east Asia have cracked down on emissions, leading to enormous improvements in air quality everywhere, with no population left behind.
Drew Pendergrass (@drewpendergrass.bsky.social)
New open-access paper at Atmos. Environment! We used machine learning to transform data from the GOCI satellite -- originally launched to study ocean color -- into daily maps of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) at 2km resolution, 2011-2022. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
