I find it embarrassing for the PD field. Our next door neighbor is putting us to shame. We can (and must do better). Make your work transparent. Expect it of others. If authors won’t share ingredients (data/code/prereg), don’t eat there—don’t read it, don’t cite it. Secrets aren’t science. 4/5
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social) reply parent
There is also bad news. If you are a Registered Reports (RR) or a PD journal. RRs are still almost non-existent. PD journals are failing at showing their work, although PDTRT is doing better than JPD. Across 299 coded articles, rates for code, data, and preregistration are 13%, 13%, and 9.7%. 3/5
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social) reply parent
There is some great news in this paper. If you are a personality journal. Across 553 coded articles, the rates for code, data, and preregistration are 65%, 59%, and 25%. @europeanjournal of personality is killing it. Almost 100% of articles published there share code. 2/5
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social)
Just accepted from @vizecolin.bsky.social and myself. We coded Open Science practices (preregistration, RRs, open data, and open code) from 2021 to 2024 in two personality disorder journals (JPD, PDTRT) and three personality journals *JOP JRP, and EJP). osf.io/preprints/ps... 1/5

Pre-listening for an upcoming show. I’m reminded why this album lived on my turntable for so many weeks (a lot of weeks). Woodland is a perfect album.

"These individuals are unbothered; immune to the turbulence of fact." I love the horror-comedy genre.
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social)
I know you've missed your Patterson content. Here it is. Patterson is super affectionate in a subtle way. He doesn't lick, jump, heartily tail wag. He just wants physical contact. He wants to sit next to me, across mynlap, or on top of me. Sometimes annoying, often welcomed.
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social) reply parent
Vinyl (vinyl, cover, insert) is also very nice.
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social)
Picked this up recently. It’s not as strong front to back as Planting by the Signs, but I like it more with every listen. Lower-fi, punker than Signs. The hypno/trance feel is there at times. And in a couple of spots (If You Were Someone I Loved), she even sounds like Grace Slick. All good things.

I might get into trouble for this, but I've been in trouble before. If, after listening to this album, you do not want to go away with Norah Jones, there is something broken in you.
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social)
Last post on Norah Jones (probably not). This album has became a touchstone for me. Or home key. Blossom Dearie served before. It's where I go after an episode of musical obsession (chased an album for a week(s)). I know it I will love it. No matter where I have just been. It is perfect. #vinyl

Patterson finally registered sounds from the TV (doorbell, barking). He found them disquieting.

Someone mentioned Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. So. Here I am. Again. (It was me. I mentioned it.)
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social)
Here is something I have never before said. In the study, cool chillin' with Patterson.
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social)
I warned you. The entire album (all 3 LPs) is great. But the hallelujah version of Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven is a stone cold killer
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social)
Patterson is "hypoallergenic". But what he drags in from outside is not. He’s a f***ing dust mop. Today he wandered past the air purifier in my room. The sensor flipped from a calm blue to an angry red, and the machine roared into overdrive. He is Pigpen. If Pigpen were a Portuguese Water Dog.
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social)
Music is not the only thing I can "listen" to obsessively. I am, thus far, resisting the temptation to share my favorite Rick and Morty episodes.

Planting by the Signs (SG Goodman) vinyl finally arrived. It is very, very good--and I am not just talking about the music. I like nice packaging.

Just an advanced amateur on Irish Whiskey. But this is good. On par with Redbreast 12, but less expensive.

I posted this a week or two ago. Because my vinyl version has not arrived, I am listening to it on Spotify at home through crappy speakers. I don't ever do this. But SG Goodman's Planting by the Signs is that good. Whole album. But Snapping Turtle and Heaven Song.... wow.

Asked a friend for a recc tonight. Got a good one. Jeffrey Foucault's Salt as Wolves. Literary folk-blues. In the Piedmont style. (Yes. I recently learned the name of that particular style. And I am making it mine.) Nice vinyl too.

I have already confessed my love for Hank Mobley and his Soul Station album. Here is another great one--Roll Call. More muscular, harder driving than Soul Station. The band on this one is aces (Hubbard, Kelly, Chambers, and Blakey). Some fine hard bop here (if that's your cup of tea).

I hope you enjoy it.

With classes starting, my summer has ended. But what a summer. I took a bunch of small trips--to see my favorite people and/or bands. I got to see almost all of my people--kids, relatives, friends. I saw some great live music. Got a lot of Patterson time. See you next year.
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social)
Rayland Baxter's Wide Awake. Lyrically interesting. Layered sound. Americana with an indie pop sensibility. I hear echoes of John Lennon. Whole album is great, but 79 Shiny Revolvers--wow. The vinyl edition is top-notch (and so pretty).

Open Science Coding day 935: I have seen several papers that say something like "the present study was not preregistered but the hypotheses are present in the literature/past work/obvious/etc." The issue is not whether the hypotheses are reasonable, but rather, when they became the hypotheses.
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social)
Bobby Hutcherson's Oblique. Great album. Outstanding vibes. Great band (Hancock, Stinson, Chambers). But I do not love the Tone Poet series from Blue Note. Selections are great. Vinyl is top-notch. I hate the packaging. Gatefold. Thick cardboard. Plastic sleeve. Hard to manipulate.
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social)
Nothing makes me feel worse about my field than reading in it. Coding open science practices across years in certain journals. Not pretty. Lots of harumphing, damn head smacking, and mutterings of "that will never replicate." I hope your days are better.

Tickets are about to go on sale for Andrew Bird's Gezelligheid--five night stand at the Fourth Presbetyrian Church (Chicago). An absolutely amazing concert experience. Venue is unique. A bit surreal. Strangely intimate. Bird is always great. Openers are always musicians' musicians. You should go.

I know I just posted about Keith Jarrett. But this is one of the best Americana albums of the year: Patterson Hood's Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams. As expected, lyrics are great. Sound is atmospheric (not DBT or previous solo Hood). Great line-up and guests. You should give it a listen.
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social)
I finally picked this one up: Keith Jarrett's The Koln Concert. Man, I should have picked this up a long time ago. Over an hour of improvisational jazz piano. Masterful.
Don Lynam (@drlynam.bsky.social)
I've been struggling to regain my reading groove. Plainsong worked: stripped-down prose, character snapshots, quietly warm and poignant. Reminds me of Gilead and A River Runs Through It.

Giving SG Goodman's Planting by the Signs a listen to decide if I want to buy it. It's not my main Americana sub-genre, but hypno-Americana can be very compelling. Kevin Morby, War on Drugs, Hiss Golden Messenger, etc. I like it. You might too.

Art Blakey Big Band and gin (terroir) soda. A one-off. Messenger-like in having a set of soon to be great players (Trane, Donald Byrd, Wynton Kelly) and Blakey at the drums. But they were just musicians. In a big band--no soaring solos. But if you like the big band sound, you'll like the album.
