Happy weekend! From c. 3,600 years ago, here’s an ancient Egyptian bead in the form of a curled-up hedgehog! 🦔💙 Blue faience, c. 1985 -1650 BC. National Museum of Scotland www.nms.ac.uk/search-our-c... 📷 by me #Archaeology

My photo shows a blue spherical bead in the form of a hedgehog curled up in a defensive ball displayed on a grey background. It is made of Egyptian faience, a ceramic material with a shiny blue glaze. The hedgehog’s face, ears, feet and tail are shown in relief, and the quills are represented by black dots painted over the surface of the bead. A hole for threading runs through the sphere - it can just be seen on the right hand side of the bead. The hedgehog’s long ears suggest this is a desert hedgehog. Desert hedgehogs may have symbolized rebirth because they reappear after hibernating underground in winter. Dated c.1985 - 1650 BC. On display at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

But even without any of that: Better ventilation and filtration in schools can MASSIVELY reduce viral spread, for all sorts of respiratory diseases.

I mended my brother’s flannel today. Three holes patched with the best fabric I had on hand, armpits sewn back up, a pocket repaired in two places, some small lines of stitches on seams that needed it, and a button replaced. Not something you see everyday. I was resting by a pond yesterday when this red-sided garter snake decided to swim across. So very cool!🌿🐍

We've got 35 sets of these posters left. This project came from my evergreen frustration with our important messages getting trapped on social media algorithms. Good stuff for posting on your local community bulletin board, classroom, office door, etc! squidfacts.bigcartel.com/product/scie...

4 12x18 inch posters on a brick and concrete wall. The top left is pink and says funding science saves lives, written in microbes, next to a microscope. The one on the right says Biology is bigger than binaries, with a fish, a lily, and a bee. The bottom left says Protecting wildlife starts wtih you, with a bunch of adiorable woodland creatues in yellow, white and black, including an owl, fungi, a... um. weasel? salamanders, butterflies, slugs, and a rotting log. The bottom right says Will our oceans thrive or nosedive the choice is yours, with the ocean represented in a circle, half of which is dead and half of which is alive, including kelp and a mackerel

I'm aware. Your original reply seemed (to me) as needlessly "correcting"/ nitpicking the word choice of a professional writer in a casual thread, rather than pointing out a neat grammar thing, FYI.

I try to be rly visible & vocal when it comes to masking and it wrecks me every time I get responses from ppl who are thankful bc they feel so isolated and alone bc otherwise caring folks won’t do the bare minimum & wear a mask—reposted this old, but relevant read. Plz read & consider masking again.

🐙🌿Phidippus tyrelli jumping spider, who looks like he's playing peekaboo but is actually using his palps to keep his eyes shiny clean. I like catching jumping spiders doing this, because it's endearing, plus you can better see their colorful chelicerae (mouthparts that end in the fangs). Usually--

A macro photo looking straight into the face of a jumping spider sitting atop a black and white rock. The spider is boldly marked with bands of black and white hairs on its legs and head, and has a pale tan mask across its eyes and metallic blue-green chelicerae, which end in curved, dark-reddish fangs. The spider is using its palps to clean its large forward-facing eyes, which makes it look like it is playing peekaboo.
