Today’s Executive Order creating a *nationwide* military “quick reaction force” and setting up an online portal to permit random fascist vigilantes to join soldiers is one of the scariest things I’ve seen in U.S. politics in my adult life. Why is it not getting more attention?

The D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force established in Executive Order 14252 of March 27, 2025 (Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful), shall establish an online portal for Americans with law enforcement or other relevant backgrounds and experience to apply to join Federal law enforcement entities to support the policy goals described in Executive Order 14333. Each law enforcement agency that is a member of the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, as well as other relevant components of the Department of Justice as the Attorney General determines, shall further, subject to the availability of appropriations and applicable law, immediately create and begin training, manning, hiring, and equipping a specialized unit that is dedicated to ensuring public safety and order in the Nation’s capital that can be deployed whenever the circumstances necessitate, and that could be deployed, subject to applicable law, in other cities where public safety and order has been lost. ( (ii) The Secretary of Defense shall immediately begin ensuring that each State’s Army National Guard and Air National Guard are resourced, trained, organized, and available to assist Federal, State, and local law enforcement in quelling civil disturbances and ensuring the public safety and order whenever the circumstances necessitate, as appropriate under law. In coordination with the respective adjutants general, the Secretary of Defense shall designate an appropriate number of each State’s trained National Guard members to be reasonably available for rapid mobilization for such purposes. In addition, the Secretary of Defense shall ensure the availability of a standing National Guard quick reaction force that shall be resourced, trained, and available for rapid nationwide deployment. image

I sat across the deposition table from Ghislaine Maxwell when she lied repeatedly – one question after the next. We have witnessed that again with the release of Maxwell’s interview where this convicted felon repeatedly and brazenly lied on the record to the government. Maxwell ruined countless young lives with impunity for too long. Her effort to recreate history and distance herself from Epstein should not and will not be tolerated. The documents don’t lie, the multiple witnesses that testified against her at trial didn’t lie – the only person lying is Maxwell.

from chandra manning's wonderful book "what this cruel war was over"

Nothing made slavery’s toxicity more obvious to Union troops than its effect on the fundamental unit of society, the family. For one thing, slave sales separated families. In the Upper South, where many Union soldiers were stationed in 1861, about one in three first marriages was broken by sale, and about half of all slave children were separated from at least one parent. 129 With their own eyes, soldiers saw slavery snap bonds between parents and children. The men of the Seventh Wisconsin were awakened by gunshots one November night. The following day, soldiers “learned, and saw the cause of the alarm in the form of two negro women—a mother and a daughter.” The pair had fled to Union lines to avoid the proposed sale of the “goodlooking” daughter into the so-called fancy trade, which soldiers viewed as a form of concubinage. Outraged by the plight and moved by the vulnerability of the mother and daughter, “every private in the ranks” cursed “that system which tramples on the honor of man, and makes merchandise of the virtue of women,” according to one member of the regiment. 130 When an Iowan encountered a young child about to be sold by her own father, who was also her master, he vowed, “By G–d I’ll fight till hell freezes over and then I’ll cut the ice and fight on.” 131

Attorney General Bondi sent me a letter last week. It purports to notify me that Washington state “has been identified” as a “so-called sanctuary jurisdiction” — on grounds that her letter makes no effort whatsoever to explain.

I had the most horrifying nightmare last night. It featured decor influencers doing videos in immigrant detention facilities. I really really really hope I'm not psychic and instead am watching too many interior design videos.

do these ghouls not realize starving kids with preexisting conditions is bad? That makes it worse than starving a child who might have more of a fighting chance in a famine. In theory, we try to reduce harm in this country to people with preexisting conditions, and in theory try Not to bomb them

Once you see this just sign offline for the day. You're not going to come across anything better. This is your sign you've had enough Internet for one day.

This is the same eugenic belief system that many still hold re: the ongoing pandemic. They believe people’s deaths from covid are acceptable if they’re medically vulnerable. It’s a disgusting ableist belief system and this rhetoric surrounding children in Gaza is the natural consequence of that

Pretty soon people will be dying of skurvy and somehow it'll be just a normal consequence of uh living near the ocean I guess.

They're not going to die of malnutrition, just uh dying *with* malnutrition. It's actually the paper cut that killed them. Or the bomb. Honestly probably that one. Can't starve people to death if you blow them up first!

I’m kind of speechless with this one. I can’t imagine the kind of person who continues to make the argument that it doesn’t count as real starvation if the kids were already sick.

Also, here’s the label. Look at that text immediately above attempting to minimize the disclaimer, just like the restaurant menu notices about the hazards of eating raw meat or the Prop 65 notice that is now on almost everything you buy. Overwarning is worse than underwarning.

I will continue to be pissed off at the chain of events that led to my disabled husband catching covid last month. Absolutely fuck you to anyone who deliberately leaves the house unmasked because "it's just a cold".

Masking is just public health 101 and I'm still in shock that on a flight I offered everyone near me a sealed n95 and said I was recovering from covid (for complex reasons I had no choice but to travel). 0 people accepted. I, of course, was masked.

Happy to say I'm allowed to nod along! I still regularly buy kn94s and n95s depending on what is available and affordable and intend to do so forever at this point.

It's the most basic idea behind public health that it CANNOT be left up to personal choice. Just like most of the people reading this thread and nodding along have inexplicably given up masking in public places (sometimes for years) and abandoned disabled folks to do our best to protect ourselves.

I lived next to Amish farms for years AND have farmer friends as an adult. I've milked cows. In no world would I ever drink milk that hasn't been pasteurized. So so so much poop and other things.

Sure. But she's not suing the state for the asinine wink wink law. I don't think she's actually really realized that she was in the wrong as much as everyone else involved.

I don't know if permanent removal would be warranted but a cps case and overall classes and education would. Unfortunately she's just going to sue the dairy, probably win, and just buy "safer" raw milk in the future.

Except she's learned nothing if she's suing the dairy rather than facing up to her own bad choices.
