I know it’s a subtle distinction that most mainstream media publications will elide but technically Judge Breyer found that the Trump administration’s *use* of the military was illegal Trump’s legal authority to *deploy* the guard in CA is a separate question that’s pending before the 9th Cir.

I try to live by this and also by the reality that we will be surprised in all directions [good and bad]. Uncertainty is a given so we might as well do what we can.
A good question to ask oneself politically is 'what do I need to ignore in order to maintain my commitment to x, y, and z?' Because if you, for example, need to ignore a whole group of people's humanity in order to vote for a horrible politician, then it may be too costly to your soul.
If you're already tying yourself to someone like Gavin Newsom, then what must you ignore in order to potentially vote for him for any office.
People whose grandparents would not have been able to get into this country under current immigration laws are out here telling others to go back where they came from, LOL. People can be truly ridiculous.

The nation of Japan has danced around this issue without ever truly coming to terms with it in 80 years. As a recently as a few years ago, there will still claims the "comfort women" were just prostitutes.
PS. Despite what this article says, my understanding is that the so-called "reparations" Japan paid never actually went to any surviving "comfort women."
Here is a piece for which @kathapollitt.bsky.social interviewed me in @thenation.com all the way back in 2001 concerning this case. Trump should be fucking ashamed. So should we all.
There were instances of American soldiers patronizing "comfort women" at the suggestion of the Japanese after the war ended. This legacy comprises the largest unremedied human rights violation perpetrated against women in human history. It is not something from which ANYONE can "go on."
Japan has never compensated any of those women, who were kidnapped and enslaved from Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia and more, for what was done to them. And that's on top of other forms of torture that I had to read and condense from the national archives from the liberation of those camps.
