I thought I would sneak in before the imminent apocalypse.

Hello. How is everyone on here?
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social)

Second sold out show for Sparks at the Royal Albert Hall and another triumph. Very proud to take the traditional end-of-show photo, this time with their amazing band: Evan Weiss, Eli Pearl, Max Whipple and Stevie Nistor. If you were there, let us know!
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Ron & Russell moved to London to record ‘Kimono My House’ in 1973 and lived in a basement flat in Thurloe Square. That place was a 10 minute walk from the Albert Hall and - taking the long way round - here they are 50 years later.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social)
What an incredible night seeing Sparks play the Royal Albert Hall for the first time. Was so proud to take this photo at the end of this amazing concert. Such a great show. Just electric. Let us know if you were there x Viva Sparks! ⚡️ ⚡️⚡️⚡️
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Whatever order you like! The documentary will give you a great introduction to the band, but this new album stands on its own too.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
I've raved enough. 'The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte' is available everywhere as we speak. Take a listen, buy the exquisite vinyl edition if you wish, but most importantly, I hope you enjoy it on repeat, as I have. Do let me know if you love it too.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
I joked with Ron and Russell that they've been crafting the perfect epitaph songs for themselves since 1974’s 'Bon Voyage'. And 'Gee That Was Fun' is no exception.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
The album closes with the rousing 'It Doesn't Have To Be That Way' and heartbreaking chaser 'Gee That Was Fun.' The latter, just stops me dead. It's another melancholic, dryly funny example of Sparks' mastery of bittersweet bangers.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
There's the brutal 'When You Leave', about how much better a social event becomes once YOU’VE departed. And 'Love Story' introduces the alarmingly specific tale of someone to trying to save his spot in line while scoring drugs for their girlfriend. I believe this is a first.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Other standouts include the infectious melody of 'You Were Meant For Me', the anthemic 'Not That Well Defined', and the boisterous middle 8 of 'Take Me For A Ride' which chants, "LET'S GO, LET'S GO LAURA!".
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
The opening trio of singles, 'Latte', 'Veronica Lake' and 'Nothing Is As Good As They Say It Is', followed by the minimalist gem of missed connections 'Escalator' exemplifies everything that is Sparks; simultaneously funny, profound, inventive, and irresistibly catchy.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
So, it pleases me to no end to call 'The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte' another triumphant classic. Packed with brilliant melodies, keen observations and witty lyrics, this album could be a greatest hits collection on its own or it could be your FIRST introduction to Sparks.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
It's also their first LP on Island Records since their mid-70s breakthrough. But don't call it a comeback! Sparks are staggering in their irrepressible invention and alarming consistency. Name another band where an album in their sixth decade ranks among their finest. You can't.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social)
I come to rave. Today, SPARKS release their 26th album, 'The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte' and I highly recommend listening from start to finish. It's the first to be written after my doc on the legendary Ron & Russell Mael and it made me swell with pride once more.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social)
Huge props to the cast of ‘The Borrowers’.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
That too. Italian hunks with hunks of bread and cheese. I’m in.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social)
Disappeared into #theeightmountains and didn’t want to come back. A gorgeous epic about friendship, adventure and some cheese making from Felix van Groeningen & Charlotte Vandermeersch, starring Luca Marinelli & my amico Alessandro Borghi. Made me want to jack it all in and venture into the wild…
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Having read the book too, I would say: do go and see it.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
There's much, much more to talk about. But the headline is: see it. I was lucky enough to see it a few weeks ago and I cannot wait to see it again. It's quite the feat of cinema.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
The cast, led by DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone & Robert De Niro, are exceptional, the latter in one of his wiliest performances, right down to his final seconds. To see this epidemic of insidious gaslighting brought to graphic life, is urgent & sobering. You won’t stop thinking about it.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social)
Am in awe of KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON. A profoundly powerful & disturbing film on an open wound subject. It's both intimate & epic, vividly tangible & exquisitely rendered by Martin Scorsese on incendiary form. Perhaps his best of this century. A must see on the big screen. 1/3
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Congrats to Ruth Wilson & the whole team for this theatrical experience. What a wild marathon. I was terrified but very proud to be 'Marty' for 15 minutes. Walking onstage to meet her Virginia with no prior discussion is one of the craziest things I've done. She's incredible.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Performed the 3 page dialogue scene. Got some laughs. Called her ‘Virginia’ “unflappable any hour of the day or night”. Ate noodles with her Lady & The Tramp style. She took off my shoes and danced in them. I put on her heels and danced in them. Off stage by 8 AM. It was electric. Would recommend.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social)
Woke at 6 AM (after 4 hours sleep). Showered. Got dressed. Jumped in a cab. Was onstage with Ruth Wilson at the Young Vic theatre at 7:45 AM for her 24 hour play ‘The Second Woman’. I played one of 100 men in the part of ‘Marty’. 1/3

On my way to Colchester…
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Have not seen either of those!
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social)
I am jammy (lucky) enough to have seen both of the two big films trailered this week; one is just as magnificently entertaining and exciting as you dream it might be, and the other is a stunning, stirring epic that may well be the best work from the director in this century. Great cinema incoming…
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
I asked Sam after I saw it, does everyone directing and acting in those plays have all Shakespeare plays memorised. They are not just off book on Hamlet, but seemingly his entire life’s work. Watching Flynn’s Burton work through a speech in various takes was hypnotic.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
It’s fantastic isn’t it? Loved it so much.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
This might be magnificent, but I couldn’t possibly say…
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
I edited this commercial !
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean… it was mixed in 1999. So I don’t know!
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Echo Beach, of course.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
I mean the TV spot. Which is on the DVD.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Guy Pratt can’t find the file! It exists on the show only.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
…it’s sampled on Yomanda’s Synth And Strings which we use for a Spaced TV spot advertising the clubbing episode. Can anyone find / rip that specific ad??? https://youtu.be/cnFka3noZDk
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social)
I just randomly heard ‘Dance Yourself Dizzy’ by Liquid Gold, which is one of the uncoolest and therefore coolest bangers of them all. This one has double the nostalgic wallop for me as, at age 5, I listened it on vinyl as part of K-Tel’s ‘Star Traks’ compilation and then 19 years later…
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social)
Don’t sleep on Daniel Goldhaber’s ‘How To Blow Up A Pipeline’, one of the best films of 2023. Thrilling, urgent and angry, but as focused on the humans involved as the pressing issues at hand. Brilliantly structured and edited too. And a superb, insistent score by Gavin Brivik. Do see it.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Now Oscar nominated?
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
On this beautiful Nighy, all is Rigg with the world.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
The shoe in Maria's face was the magic ingredient that helped make the film a hit. Thank you and farewell to the great Maria Charles. You were a small but mighty part of a film we are all so proud of. I send all my warmest thoughts to her family and loved ones.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Even more incredible than being allowed to shoot pickups before our test screening, was the response to the scene. When it played to a packed house, I’ve never heard such an enormous laugh for anything in my work. The next scene was drowned out. I turned to Eric and Nira and gave them a thumbs up.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Maria kindly returned to shoot this close-up of a shoe-on-a-stick that we reversed, so we could pull it at speed from her face. This is an old Jackie Chan trick from the Hong Kong school of cinema.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Amazingly Eric Fellner and Nira Park trusted me to do a small reshoot outside London to punch up the sequence. Simon Pegg didn't return for the additional filming, as we had his coverage already. During the reshoot, we covered a key shot of Angel’s foot going directly into Mrs. Reaper's face.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
We shot the scene where Nicholas Angel takes out the two Reapers in Somerset in the early summer of 2006. However, when I got into the editing process, it became clear we needed a couple of killer set-ups to make the scene really pop. I asked if this were possible before we test screened the film.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social)
Was very sad to hear the great actress, Maria Charles, passed away a few weeks ago. I had the privilege of working with Maria on ‘Hot Fuzz’. She played the shotgun-wielding ‘farmer’s mum’, Mrs. Reaper, and was part of the (in)famous scene that got the biggest laugh of any film I’ve ever worked on.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social)
My autocorrect changes ‘right’ to ‘Rigg’, and ‘night’ to ‘Nighy’. I’m okay with it.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social)
Am in a cab in Paris and ‘Ça plane pour moi’ is playing. All is right with the world.

Was lucky enough to see ‘The Motive And The Cue’ at the National Theatre. Sam Mendes directing Jack Thorne’s play about the frictions on the 1966 Burton/Gielgud production of Hamlet. Mark Gatiss as John Gielgud, Johnny Flynn as Burton and Tuppence Middleton as Liz Taylor were all knockouts! See it!
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social)
Got to see Jacques Tati’s ‘Playtime’ on the huge BFI IMAX screen and it was glorious. My favourite screening I’ve ever seen of it. Stories are always better when they are literally several storeys high.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Is Skeet really the term for posting? Makes me think of ‘Top Secret!’
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Jaffa.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
There’s one - that’s neither DC not Marvel, but it’s been more than a little complicated to set up. So maybe one day, maybe never.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent

Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Max Cady’s favourite movie!
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Don’t ask me pick a favourite Mael brother. I can’t do it.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
What genre?
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
I can’t pick a favourite. They are all my favourites. Okay, maybe ‘A Fistful Of Fingers’ is the least loved of them. But I have more fondness for it as it gets further away. It’s dumb and so silly but it also got my foot in the door in lots of ways.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social)
Follow @larrythek.bsky.social and @peterapeel.bsky.social : two of my favourite fellow film geeks.

I can confirm this is Rian. But am I me? Anyway, do follow x
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent

Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe not ‘favourite’ but I’ll never forget John Mackenzie’s ‘Apaches’.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
I think smaller indies will always be made, but middle range original studio films are increasingly like unicorns.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
No! X
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
No. I think it’s funnier at 90 seconds.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
I actually think, in collaboration with some amazing cast and crew, it exceeded what was in my first draft.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
I did. I saw it at the cinema and found it hypnotic.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
I did enjoy the Oscars this year actually. I try to do my due diligence as an Oscar voter and watch every nominee.

Hmmm. A really scary old school Dracula film would be fun. I mean most have been redone of late… How about The Old Dark House?
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Not tall enough. Maybe an Ewok.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Maybe in the plural.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Has it been?
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
No! But I saw that last week. Tons of fun.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Well I wrote and directed it, so I guess, yes?
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Nothing! He’s ace. Haven’t worked with many of the HF cast since but would again if the part was right.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
We’d love to do another movie. I don’t know if it would be another Cornetto. I think we’d want to break free of the Walls next time x
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Not that one.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
One of these I saw the day before….
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
No. They don’t come in that often. But always up for one if the timing is right.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
How can I top my one second cameo as a resistance fighter in VIII?
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Mmm… Japan?
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
From the nozzle straight into my gob.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
But do they resonate years later? Of course. And if your film is famous and celebrated for decades and decades and brings enjoyment to millions, why do you need the golden statuette too? So many favourites of mine didn’t get any awards so ultimately it doesn’t matter.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
Writing pithy answers like this.
Edgar Wright (@edgarwright.bsky.social) reply parent
They were all tough to make! But love them all and can’t pick.
