Oh the pain of being Finnish. You can be watching Patrick McGoohan's personal-political masterpiece of the Cold War, hollowing democracy and the self via Kafka and Warhol, and all you're thinking is "holy shit, is that Number Two sitting in beloved Finnish design classic the Ball Chair?".

I like to imagine Imanishi spending twenty years regretting not giving Cima a girlfriend and then jumping at the chance to fix his error.

Babylon 5 did lots of in-universe tv broadcasts, like news reports, at least one documentary and panel discussions. They were still part of the narrative so not quite what you mean, but they still did a lot to make the world more alive.

It's nice that Hartley apparently never lost his T&A craft, despite the conversion. Must have been a relief to many a Christian teen reader.

"Critical reading" is understood to mean specifically just sort of repeatedly pointing out the things you dont enjoy about the text as a kind of apology for enjoying it.

I've heard this but I didn't get the logic of the insult. Is it like "your father is so bad at supporting the family financially he might as well be a mom"?

I think at least Vallejo's color charts give a pretty good idea of what the paint looks like.

The Silmarillion has no sex scenes either, but it's clearly a much more sexual work with desire as a central motivating factor. In comparison, LOTR feels like it's still in children's literature mode.

Absolutely no m/m relationships, though.
Girard Spriggan (@eijaksa.bsky.social) reply parent
I'd argue there's minor things, like Wendy/Nyla and Maisie/Ireesha are implied to be couples, Sabina's fans are all girls, two of Suletta's opponents in 13 are girls and thus trying to marry Miorine, and no one bats an eye when they realize Suletta and Miorine aren't just fake engaged anymore.

Thanks for scanning it! Is this a mid-90s release? The characters look very Slayers-y.

Perhaps the finest embodiment of wabi-sabi, the Japanese art of accepting the beauty of transience and imperfection, is the campy 90s adventure show for children and lesbians who had no other options.

Suletta's such a sweetheart. I remember there being all sorts of theories of how she and Miorine would reunite as part of a daring rescue mission and then she just went to talk to her.

Girard Spriggan (@eijaksa.bsky.social) reply parent
From what I've seen, lots of mecha anime of the day liked to have somewhat bland heroes who'd act as anchors for the more colorful side characters. Kamille is not that. I like what they do with older Amuro, though.

One of my favorite film history anecdotes is that Pasolini was concerned about how the film would affect the young actors so he made it a very fun set. Some of the kids were shocked by how dark the film turned out after they'd had such a great summer camp experience making it.

Alberich enslaves the other dwarves, who according to the text are normal, decent people. Mime wants to do the same. But yeah, the work realizes the dwarves aren't really worse than the other characters. Wotan is the same as Alberich, only he becomes suicidal instead of going for one more scheme.

Yeah, the game would have been insufferable if Kreia really was the author's mouthpiece earnestly criticizing Star Wars for whatever. Her being a bizarre extremist who's clearly wrong about some things and probably insincere about others is so compelling.

Girard Spriggan (@eijaksa.bsky.social) reply parent
Contrary to its reputation, The Prince isn't that bloodthirsty of a book. It does think a prince must be capable of ruthless action if necessary (it was a brutal world), but a major theme is that you must not oppress your people. The book's ideal prince is more Tywin Lannister than Joffrey.
Girard Spriggan (@eijaksa.bsky.social) reply parent
No, that's a discredited idea Rousseau came up with but which lives on in pop culture. The Prince is Machiavelli trying to get a job with the aristocratic Medicis, so he's not flying his republican colors, but experts think the advice is sincere.

Ash had orders to "bring back lifeform" and was a sudden replacement on the crew, so they probably knew a decent amount. In an earlier version of the script WY had deciphered the message and knew exactly what was there, but later revisions are more ambiguous.

Girard Spriggan (@eijaksa.bsky.social) reply parent
You can't even blame it on the source material, since the worst of the Houlihan bullying is apparently original to the film. Altman didn't write the script, but its otherwise so clearly his film he could have surely gotten those scenes changed if he wished. Wonder what was up with that.

Wagner's libretti don't align with Nazi ideology. They're ambiguous works heavily influenced by anarchism, socialism and Schopenhauer. Tristan and Isolde is about the heroes cucking their king, Ring about the evil of choosing power over love, Parsifal about pacifism and compassion.

Great thread! In a sense McGillis choosing not to trust his friends is rational, but his plan still requires a leap of faith by trusting that Bael will make the rest of Gjallarhorn follow him. It's unimaginably sad he's willing to bet on that but not his loved ones, as you show.

Probably the general insularity. The classics being revalued are the "golden age" stuff - no one's going after Mary Shelley or HG Wells - which was its own little world revolving around a few significant editors with their own preferences and worldviews. These are not shared by most modern fans.
