Right? They get a good deal making the story they want AND a paying audience invested in said plot at the same time. Why would they ever go back?
So let's see, the audience is more receptive to character-driven episodes and the underlying messages about working class folks, complex relationships, the world they live in, and oh, Brandon agrees with the idea of what becomes the main couple?
THAT IS THE PERFECT IMAGE TO GO WITH THIS.
I feel like it shouldn’t be a problem if clients are clearly warned that their commissions can sit on queue almost indefinitely, like the aforementioned warning.
So many people who claim to understand the shows better than Viv does are showing off much they only watch them superficially.

Their support was very conditional to begin with, and they wouldn’t even commit to it (or, at best, it wasn’t enough to make a difference). That’s why they’re appealing to an audience who are in for the plot but still appreciate some funny side stories to supplement mid-season wait times.
So the ex-fans insinuating that they were indispensable, that because they were there first they’re entitled to get whatever they want… they weren’t as much of a majority as they thought. Where were they when their reception and financial support mattered? What message did it send the studio?
So Spindlehorse got the message and is continuing to appeal to that majority by toning down the “mission” plots in favor of the main one (NOT an overnight decision in real time though), while still using them in lower-budget shorts so that they’re still in their own spot.
It’s like this… HB pilot was made before the decision was made to make a more dedicated overarching plot starting with S1. What was the fan reception like? The majority preferred this new direction, while the episodes focused on missions were consistently the lowest rated of the bunch.
The ironic part about the disgruntled ex-fan drama is that HB’s development is more than Viv and Brandon embracing their creative vision: it’s Spindlehorse finding its niche. The numbers they got from fans receptive to the show’s plot for the long haul exceeded the ones who’d only wanted hijinks.
I really despise the way it’s been normalised, even by fans who seemingly aren’t as rabid Imo there’s really this attitude of ‘well, if your work doesn’t cater exactly to the taste of your audience, you should expect them to treat you like dirt and like they have a right -
"not handling serious topics well" is just them saying "not handling serious topics in a way I personally deem worthy" If victims aren't all portrayed as sad uwu traumatized babies with no personality outside of trauma it's "glorifying"

That something changing from how it was originally introduced is treated as a massive betrayal and just as outrageous as an actual crime is NOT healthy behavior.
The way fandoms mistreat artists under the flimsy pretext of “criticism” is deplorable and toxic. “You owe your success to us, so you have to do whatever we say.”
My takeaway from that Lorcana debacle is that responding to the backlash GenAI receives by lying about not using it puts its already-low credibility in the negatives.
It’s one thing to say that Vaggie is bad for lying to Charlie (because it is, don’t get me wrong), but it’s another to say that Vaggie lied to Charlie for malicious reasons ( selfish, didn’t trust Charlie, etc) when that wasn’t the case.

Also, if their whole gimmick is “exposing” her wrongdoings, then what’s supposed to be so incriminating about that? This outrage can only ever pander to people angry and entitled that the show isn’t exactly like how it was originally introduced as.
"If I kill them I'm no better than them" and "I know I should kill them but I just can't" are tropes such a thin line between them, but to me one is ass and the other is peak cinema

They don’t really want characters, they just want archetypes. They’re not allowed to change or evolve from when they were first introduced.
I *somehow* managed to set all my files to be saved locally, but it was a risky move because Win 11 is very grumpy when you do that.
If you can't engage with a story unless you learn all the rules of the setting and they are followed to the letter, you don't want a story, you want an RPG.
If that movie was a TV series it would’ve been accused of retconning its plot, because it goes in a way different direction after the first act that gradually turns the backstory you’d learned on its head.
When a story’s themes involve questioning and subverting long-held dogmas, you can’t trust the lore itself at face value. Go watch the Sea Beast.
People will complain that the Hellaverse’s writing isn’t handling serious topics well (read: trying to be as grimdark as possible as substitute for depth) because they already have the mindset that women who embrace their indulgences instead of hiding them can’t do “serious” storytelling.
CHERUBS from Helluva Boss is an ep that I find interesting on rewatch. the CHERUBS were so tunnel visioned in their goal to "save" Lyle despite him being a rich asshole, yet he was still condemned despite his "epiphany" while this same sorting system saw through Pentious and brought him to heaven->

A friend pointed that character when I described one of my characters, it's a very good design!
They thought he was a handsome Gary Stu immune to the sex comedy up until he got a narcissistic statue of himself with a giant boner.
It’s because instead of getting more badass and revolutionary like they wanted, his flaws started being exposed more and more.
lowkey a lot of striker haters and s1 striker purists are anti HB coded with the way they hate that the character gets given more depth which suddenly makes him bad and "ruined"
Most of the characters in my urban fantasy Timekeepers story look like kemonomimi and you’re gonna have to deal with that.
Even as a furry I get irritated when people think character design improvement begins and ends with “make the character with animal motifs look more obviously like an animal” especially if the design already had a fair integration of animal parts without getting too literal.
Me: "I love when they show relationships are not perfect in media. Couples can still love each other deeply despite occasional relationship conflicts" Me when my ship has a slight disagreement: "I am a child of divorce"
But even without it being so serious… I think fantasy is a lot more fun if you don’t obsessively compartmentalize everything to substitute complexity. Real-life science is not clear cut black-and-white, so why should magic be?
Modern oppression is not constant, easily recognizable abuse MOST of the time. It’s mundane microaggressions and subtle denial of rights until they find an excuse to label you a scapegoat, while you still have to go about your day. That’s what the Hellaverse’s worldbuilding is like.
If systemic oppression is going to be a plot point in settings where the higher classes DO have a supernatural advantage, then introduce ways where resistance matters and can even the playing field.
If you just want to do magical genetic determinist worldbuilding like DND or even A/B/O, then just do that, but then don’t go around implying that caste systems have to “make sense.”
Actually, my hot take is that it’s awkward when fantasy stories try to *seriously* justify the existence of their caste system for RPG-style lore if it tries to do anti-racist social commentary. It defeats the point a bit when your fantasy world justifies magical “race science.”
They have to go to Earth for some reason and Loona says that exactly: “Wait, your disguise has a beard?” Meanwhile, I’m still wondering how I would render those collie fur tufts if BROK ever needed a human form.

The biggest issue was Limus thinking they could speak for every abuse victim bc they are one. It got even worse because they are not a victim of human trafficking, which is Angel's specific type of abuse, yet they felt entitled to speak over human trafficking victims too.
It’s also what still allows us to MAKE the show and shorts so like ???? 😂 bruh. Animation is expensive lol
Charitably speaking, this mess looked like good intentions gone bad. Limus claimed she wanted a safe space that she didn't have growing up, but she wasn't qualified nor interested in handling the responsibility and nuance. I think she just assumed being inflammatory equals positive role model.

I think the hellaverse shows are masterful in their worldbuilding the art direction, narratives, system dynamics, and characters all feel unified in establishing the ‘reality’ of their pocket universes
