As a spotty teenage boy, with one and only one thing on my mind, I was regularly drawn to the books by the covers. However, I could never stomach the bilge inside. There was better writing, which was also less demeaning to women in the newsagent's top-shelf magazines.

Silk was hard to get in 40s Britain, even without the war. An Uncle was in the RN in the Far East. When he came back home for officer training in 1942, he managed to bring a big bolt of silk. His sisters greeted him like a conquering hero; the silk eventually became their wedding dresses.

Kirk was a Nazi, hence he's "good" as the only good Nazi is a dead one. Something which seems utterly lost on the BBC & much of the news media, who seem to be determined to cement his place as MAGA's (and by extension UK fascism's) martyred saint.

Why does he feel the need to comment on the murder of a US extremist who means nothing to most UK voters? If this is part of his/McSweeney's strategy to woo Reform voters, it's just pathetic. Even Farage would (publicly) baulk at some of Kirk's views & wouldn't want Reform associated with them.

Agreed about Ultraviolet. The story is that Joe Ahearne never intended to write & direct all 6 episodes. But no one else's scripts were considered good enough. The result was that his time was totally consumed with the first series; he never had the time & was too knackered to develop a second arc.

Gurkhas terrified the Germans in Italy. One (possibly apocryphal) story my Dad told about working with the Gurkhas: A Gurkha night patrol found 3 Germans asleep in a bunker. They cut the throats of 2 but left the man in the middle unharmed to tell the story & spread terror amongst his comrades.

Doesn't he have to get permission from his son before he can look at, never mind lick, another man's balls? That must make for some really awkward conversations at the family dinner table.

Rayner's offences were being female, northern & working class & of course, a lefty. A right-wing male ex-Etonian (or Dulwichian(?)) could have shagged the estate agent, pocketed the tax money & told critics to sod off. The Fail & Torygraph would be lauding a blow struck against woke, or whatever.

Any imaginable grift, the more absurd the better, as long as it ticks their boxes - they'll swallow it wholesale. Looking at them on TV, I think there needs to be more research done on the effects of leaded petrol on the inability of many of the over-50s to cope with reality.

I respect the Union Flag; my family has a military tradition & it's the flag they served under. But I went to a lot of punk/ska gigs in my youth; these were often disrupted by NF supporting skinheads with England flags. So when I see one, it brings back visceral memories of fighting racist twats.

This gets progressively funnier with every use of the term "floppy".

One of Britain’s most senior police officers has launched an angry tirade against Extinction Rebellion protesters going “all floppy” when they get arrested. Sir Stephen House, the deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan police, said the tactic of going limp was a “flipping nuisance” as it required extra officers to drag protesters away. House told a London assembly police and crime committee hearing: “We have asked them to stop being floppy. And that might seem like a silly thing to say, but when we arrest them and pick them up, they go all floppy, which is why you see four or five officers carrying them away. It’s a complete waste of officers’ time, and a complete pain in the neck.” Extinction Rebellion: how successful were the latest protests? Read more House also expressed annoyance at how the tactic made the police look heavy-handed. He said: “The problem with them going floppy and four offices carrying them away [is that it] looks to the general public like police are overreacting here. We’re not making them go floppy. They’re just sort of being a nuisance.”

In my youth, I worked briefly for a charity run by a Catholic Missionary Order. They did good work, but the Brothers lived comfortable lives. I had to make a weekly report to my supervisor, Brother T, in his study. This was no chore, as I got a glass of fine single malt or, on occasion, good claret.

Since the beginning of agriculture, when granaries became temples & food stores came under the control of priests, religion has been a racket. Cynics & charlatans proliferate, happily exploiting believers & the gullible for status & power. They hate it when anyone has the temerity to point this out.

I can easily imagine a first Reform cabinet comprising Farage, Tice and a bunch of teenage racists fresh from public school. Rapidly followed by a Farage meltdown when he realises that as PM, he actually has to do some work and can't spend all day lying on GB News or brown nosing Trump.
