Dad was a tank troop leader in Italy. His Churchills, supported the Gurkhas during 44/45. A pre-war professional soldier, he developed tremendous respect for their professionalism, military ability and ferocity. He also gained a lifelong love of all things Indian and Nepali, particularly the food.

In my youth, I worked briefly for a charity run by a Catholic Missionary Order. They did good work, but the Brothers lived comfortable lives. I had to make a weekly report to my supervisor, Brother T, in his study. This was no chore, as I got a glass of fine single malt or, on occasion, good claret.
