The attitudes towards genre classics by genre are really fascinating to me. I can’t imagine many contemporary horror writers being like “yeah Frankenstein and Dracula suck actually. Haunting of Hill House? Not necessary. 18th century gothics? Ugh, problematic, don’t bother.”
Very interesting that the only (sci-fi) authors you see complaining about "you shouldn't need to read classics" are contemporary, recently published ones. Maybe the reason why the genre is fading into irrelevance is because it fails to learn anything from the past and continues to regurgitate itself
