So I disagree with part of this. The worst people do not use debate as a tool for discussion, they use debate as a pulpit to legitimize and disseminate a message. Even if they don't convince anyone in the moment, they still win andhave achieved their goals. There's no unshown frustration.
This is something that always struck me growing up in the south. Time and time again, people found more fault with someone "raising their voice" than with someone being actively racist. Someone could say the worst shit you've ever heard, but whoever gets heated calling them out is the villain.

I tend to use it in the most clinical sense where there is definitely a degree of empathy. I've had the misfortune of interacting with some due to circumstances, and they are absolutely masters of reading and understanding emotions of others, just selectively applying "where they care".

When I was a kid, I was so excited when my parents would actually talk to me about what I was playing, because I was alone most of the time. When my nephews were young, I'd go out of my way just to like... hang out and let them rant about rocket league or whatever.
My personal addition to this: kids fucking love it when you play games with them. If your kids are hanging out alone gaming all the time, it's not that they're avoiding you it's that you are avoiding them.
