It's frustrating to see people only now catching on to something I've been writing about—Palantir and Anduril, and fantasy as a site of white worldbuilding—since 2019. Here are excerpts from MAGICAL/REALISM, in the essays "The Final Boss" (1-2) and "When We All Loved a Show About a Wall" (3):

MAGICAL/REALISM excerpt: ... about as much as a sixteen-ounce bottle of Aquafina. But if used worldwide, that water consumption quickly adds up into something much more significant. 2. Training one Al model can release as much as five cars' lifetime's worth of carbon emissions. Training GPT-3 required the amount of water used to fill a nuclear cooling tower. 3. ChatGPT's creator, OpenAl, paid Kenyan workers as little as $1.32 per hour to parse and label toxic Al content. AI labor is routinely outsourced to the global south, and exposure to its most extreme language and images has traumatized workers. 4. Al is at the forefront of mass surveillance and facial recognition technologies used by federal agencies, military, and police. Peter Thiel, Facebook board member and Trump adviser, is a primary funder of companies Palantir, Clearview Al, and most recently Anduril (named after a sword in The Lord of the Rings, also backed by SpaceX), maker of the 189 autonomous surveillance towers along the US-Mexico border. Customs and Border Protection began using compulsory facial recognition technology to scan migrants at border crossings in Texas and California in September 2018. Clearview Al trained on excerpt from MAGICAL/REALISM: ... local police departments, and such technologies have recently been implemented at scale, when ICE and the FBI scanned state DMV databases without the public's knowledge or consent, and Miami police used the technology to arrest a protester following the George Floyd uprisings. After Clearview signed a contract with ICE in 2020, Charles Johnson, Breitbart writer and close associate of Thiel, wrote they were ALTHOUGH LATINES ARE RARELY, IF EVER, PRESENT IN FANTASY imaginaries, fantasy is inextricable from Latine immigrant lives, forming the language, symbols, technologies, and policies of far- right, anti- immigrant actors. Peter Thiel, billionaire tech investor and Trump adviser, named his mass surveillance companies, used by US Customs and Border Protection and ICE, after magical Lord of the Rings artifacts. Palantir, a data- mining and visualization company, is named after the palantíri, the seven seeing- stones, a network of crystal balls used to telepathically gather intelligence and surveil Middle-earth. Thiel’s latest company, Anduril, is named after the sword reforged from the shards of Narsil, the sword Isildur used to cut Sauron down, and wielded by Aragorn, King of Gondor and Isildur’s heir. The runes inscribed on Andúril read, “Sun. I am Andúril who was once Narsil, sword of Elendil. The slaves of Mordor shall flee from me. Moon.” Anduril is the maker of solar- powered surveillance towers that run day and night along the US- Mexico border. They are tall, thin steel poles with mounted cameras, sticking up from the landscape like swords. The US- Mexico border wall itself is a fantasy. It is the fantasy of the white ethnostate, and the fight against cultural and hemispheric rupture, surging with racialized, laboring bodies, desperate to invade. Any border, reinforced by a wall, is a site of race- making, nation- building, resource hoarding, wealth extraction, and temporal dislocation— a narrative site where difference is produced through language, and violently maintained by the fantasy of shared identity. For Jon, the vio- lence required of him to maintain the Wall rested on his identity as a man of Westeros, a fantasy of belonging that would only ever see him, a bastard and man of the Night’s Watch, as a second- class citizen, un- worthy of title, land, or family name, and therefore, any lineage or inheritance— futurelessness.

Nah. The orcs and Uruk-hai were constructed from Tolkien's deep-seated anxieties toward immigrants from the West Indies infiltrating his perfect little Oxford town. Monsters and migrant anxiety are built from the same fantasy imaginary, as I wrote about in MAGICAL/REALISM (May 2024).

Something I'm noting as I research my next book is that the introduction of a new technology that abstracts and devalues labor is *always* an opportunity for a workers' revolution, and in the West, this has almost always been squashed. With AI, we have such an opportunity now.

GRRM’s politics are far more progressive than you might think. He holds workshops for marginalized and indigenous writers and despite some outdated white man nonsense, wrote some pretty radical ideas into his books. As a postcolonial lit scholar, I was surprised. I don’t cape for white men lightly.

NSF and NIH cut off almost 300 grants to UCLA. Story by @dangaristo.bsky.social www.science.org/content/arti...

The suspensions landed perhaps most heavily in math. NSF suspended a $25 million grant for the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM), an international center at UCLA that hosts about 2000 visiting researchers every year for workshops and other programs. One of its stars, Terence Tao, a Fields Medal winner frequently named as one of the greatest living mathematicians, also had his only NSF grant suspended. The $750,000 award was in its first year and supported Tao’s own research and a handful of graduate students in developing tools to tell whether a set of numbers is structured or random. Tao says he now cannot offer research assistant opportunities during the academic year, and he calls the cuts to IPAM “quite disastrous.”

I loved this book. And when I learned about its marketing campaign back in the early 2000s, I was FLOORED. They had horse and carriage deliveries of the book in WAX PAPER with a WAX SEAL

You’re comparing a farmer’s market to an AMC movie theater concession stand to Walmart. All three sell food, but in very different capacities.

This just simply isn’t true. I’ve used them all, and they’re not comparable. They are solely on the graph to put Spotify in the middle, but looking critically at the scope of service, market share, and payout per stream, Spotify is by far the lowest paying. This chart is misleading, and purposely so

The apps that pay less are not competitive or comparable apps re: market share (have you used Deezer? It’s not close), Pandora is streaming RADIO, and YouTube music is a different kind of service. So considering Spotify is the most popular streaming service, it is the lowest-paying per stream.

I’m very much not a liberal. I’m a landback prison abolitionist and believe workers should seize the means of production ASAP. And no, Spotify famously pays less than every streaming service. I also never said Joe Rogan, but now that you mention it, absolutely fuck that piece of shit.

And the problem is ABSOLUTELY Spotify. What they pay in streaming, the AI artists they’re promoting so they get streaming revenue so that they don’t have to pay human artists, the CEO investing in AI military technology … SPOTIFY IS THE ENTIRE FUCKING PROBLEM

I recommend it for the simple fact that using it does not help the CEO invest in AI drones or promote AI artists over human beings. I don’t need 24/7 access to The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. I can check it out, and if I like it, then I can buy singles. It’s a different paradigm.

Libraries do not have CDs to check out anymore. If they do, they sell them. I bought a stack of CDs for $2. Now, they have a streaming app called Freegal and Hoopla.

Anyway, fuck Spotify for featuring AI artists, and fuck their CEO for investing 800 million into AI drones. If they can turn evil, the rest can too. Uber, DoorDash, etc. support ICE and the Big Beautiful Bill. Use the library, take the bus, go to restaurants again. Fuck these companies.

Another free music streaming app through the library is Hoopla. They have more current artists’ discographies, like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Taylor Swift, but a smaller selection.

They have lots of artists’ discographies: Tribe Called Quest, OutKast, Nas, Wu Tang, Modest Mouse, etc. Rock was a bit lacking, but they also get rights to singles, so if they get the Stranger Things soundtrack, you get Master of Puppets, for example. Unlimited free streaming through your library.

I’ve been looking for a replacement for Spotify for months. I want to stop giving all tech companies any more money, and decided to just check CDs out from the library, rip them, and take them back. As it turns out, the library has its own streaming app: Freegal Music. www.lapl.org/freegal/

Incendiary work from Nathan Munn today, filled with rage and truth flaminghydra.com/issue-363/

The spoiled brats who lead these corporations stomp and pout and tell us with straight faces that without the total eradication of copyright, without the immediate handing over of all of our creations, their cherished businesses will plummet to Earth. Billions of investment dollars will evaporate. The threat to national security will be existential. And then, incredibly, in the same breath, they tell us that our works of creativity—the texts and drawings and songs they’ve copied and made use of without asking—are actually worthless. The things you create, they say, are unoriginal, derivative, pointless meanderings of your dumb little minds. Nothing more. How can both positions be true? If our creations are so worthless, how can the entire valuation of these enterprises rest on their ability to steal them?

I have. It’s good. But temporary stories about “issues in our day and age,” like mass shootings, white male radicalization, antivaxxers, religious parents, pro-life moms, human trafficking, mass shooting … it’s 5 years too late and more than a little surface level with no commentary or real risks
