After recording 12+ hours of the ACIP meeting, my transcription software service just warned me that I am approaching my monthly account minutes limit.💀

Today, ACIP voted down its own proposal to require prescriptions for Covid vaccines. It also voted to recommend “individual-based decision-making,” aka talk to a healthcare provider before getting one. So, uh, what exactly was the point of this meeting? www.wired.com/story/rfk-jr...

At the ACIP meeting this afternoon, a representative from the American Pharmacists Association had to point out to members that in many states, the authority for pharmacists to give vaccines is based on ACIP recommendations. It's as if the new ACIP members don't actually know what ACIP does.

It's possible we will see an uptick eventually, but those diseases aren't nearly as infectious as measles and they require a much lower percentage of vaccination within a community to provide protection.

To be fair, the FDA under the Biden administration declared the tirzepatide shortage over at the end of last year. Semaglutide followed in February.

Lots of folks qualify for Wegovy or Zepbound but get insurance denials. Rather than paying full price ($1,000+ a month), people have sought out cheap compounded versions instead. Now, patients are faced with losing access—and some are taking desperate measures: www.wired.com/story/glp-1-...

Millions of people turned to compounded GLP-1s when they couldn't get brand-name Wegovy or Zepbound for weight loss. Now the FDA is putting an end to copycat drugs, leaving patients scrambling. Some are even going to the gray market. My latest, with @knibbs.bsky.social: www.wired.com/story/glp-1-...

Someone just asked why we're buying apple juice from China when we have apple surpluses here sometimes. In addition to not having the processing infrastructure, if we were to try and replace the apple juice we import (~430 million gallons) we'd need to grow an additional 15 billion apples per year.

I'm a staff writer at WIRED, and I'm looking to speak with folks taking compounded GLP-1s and how you're being affected now that the FDA has said compounding of semaglutide and tirzepatide must stop. Feel free to reach out on Signal at emullin.06 or email at emily_mullin@wired.com.

The war over off-brand GLP-1s continues. Eli Lilly is now suing some bigger telehealth companies, including Henry Meds and Mochi, for selling what it says are illegal knock-offs of tirzepatide that contain add-on ingredients. My story with @knibbs.bsky.social: www.wired.com/story/glp-1-...
