Here in Australia candidates are selected by internal party processes, with no primary elections, and of course you can spoil your ballot, leave it blank or even take it away with you and not submit it — no one checks that you have put it in. Our independent electoral commission conducts elections.

My son played the Postman in a stage musical adaptation of the Jolly Christmas Postman in England last year. It had all the charm of the books, and was developed with the Ahlberg Estate. The show will be on again next Christmas in Manchester.

I had a 1/4 acre garden in a subtropical climate (Sydney) with chickens, fruit trees and vegetables and we had mulberries, corn, cucumbers, pumpkins, lettuce, silver beet, beetroot, and tomatoes in summer, and silver beet, spinach and cabbage in winter. And I STILL went grocery shopping every week.

I’m absolutely loving the embroidery — it feels like the ladies of the Norman Court are just over my shoulder, helping. I’ve been wondering if they had an embroidery equivalent of handwriting, and were able to tell that Lady Agatha had made panel X just by looking.

We made my aunt’s Christmas pudding recipe which calls for ‘breakfast cups’ of ingredients. We improvised with metric cups and it worked! ‘Tis the season for vintage cooking.

The reason convicts’ government issue clothes were marked all over with large arrows was to stop convicts selling them as clothes were in extremely short supply in 1790s New South Wales and were incredibly valuable. I imagine US prison clothes were striped for the same reason.
