5. Keywords, by Raymond Williams Williams is like my favorite thinker ever and this is a good entry point. Williams traces the evolution of important concepts in Western culture over time in alphabetized entries that are as smart as they are informative. That's my boy Ray.
4. The Voyage of the Sable Venus, by Robin Coste Lewis All the poems here are good but the centerpiece is the title poem, a tour de force through the history of visual representations of Black women in which every word and phrase is the title of an artwork which includes a Black woman.
3. The 11th Hour: A Curious Mystery, by Grahame Base This book kicks ass. You get a fun poem, great illustrations, and a tremendous set of puzzles to solve. One of my favorite reading experiences of all time.
2. I Remember, by Joe Brainard Brainard, a collagist, writes his autobiography by assembling a series of sentences each beginning "I Remember." The effect is hypnotic and by the end you'll be remembering all sorts of stuff you thought you'd forgot. Funny and poignant and all that good stuff.
1. Life, a User's Manual, by George Perec, translated by David Bellos Perec was an absolute wizard of language. There's some high-concept shenanigans here but the thing that's cool is that Perec's writing is so precise it's almost laser-cut. Every detail is so carefully observed.
