honestly I think the first is still a more complete game there’s a lot more content (esp with the expansion) but dd2 is a better playing game and at this point it performs pretty well

yeah i came to it a little late but i burned a ton of hours on it. the fashion was incredible, and the game in general was just such a great way to hang out with people i played a ton of it with @sievish.bsky.social for a while and i miss those days

when we were shipping DATV i would go through them at a clip that worried even me
there is no form of writing i enjoy more than prose writing. even unfinished projects just let you do so much with text that (at least for me) isn't possible in games writing, at least not in the kind of games writing that i get paid to do.

yakuza is a game i had 0 interest in for a very long time, and then i played it, and it is just so very good i'm still gonna talk about the things i'm playing and what i'm enjoying but it definitely feels like walking on eggshells sometimes

and just to be clear i do not blame the games press in any way for any of the harassment i've ever gotten they are not the people collapsing context and they are, by and large, overworked and underpaid people doing a difficult job under even more challenging circumstances

honestly it’s a multilayered problem gamers, sure, but it’s also studio mandates I’ve gotten my hand slapped for some pretty innocuous shit someone else said it but my gut is that a lot of Important People really want people to forget that games are made by people

people want an easy and clean narrative with clear villains and the reality is that 99% of game dev is just imperfect people doing the best they can under brutal circumstances
you get some good gems like Aftermath but much like how the games industry of old no longer exists, the same is true of the games journalism of old
the problem is there simply isn’t money for it everyone is overworked and underpaid and every executive who owns a gaming site is trying to pivot them into the most efficient money making strategies which are rarely the same strategies that produce good content
it’s wild to find out the things I am apparently responsible for! most of them come as a complete surprise to me, too
