I haven't had a VCR in decades, but I do have a bin of VHS tapes should that change. Including the original KCBS telecast of Game 7 of the 1988 NBA Finals I used to have an index card inside the tape box that had key points (Byron Scott's dunk after halftime, etc) marked by counter number
IIRC we had a top-loader VCR like this one, with a corded remote control. Also notable was the 4-digit counter, which I would use to mark time on stuff I recorded
