And with that, the boy took hold of some of his angry mane, which had begun to relax and walked with him towards his family's home.
the fire that burned around the village lighting up his eyes as he did. the beast finally broke and looked where the boy did. "I believe I would like that very much. I have many things I may have destroyed in all these lifetimes. I think it might be time to put those lives behind me."
the boy looked at him and said, "Sir, beast, that is my treasure. that is my baby sister. her eyes are not afraid of you because she sees your soul. and now that she does, I can too..." he smiled again and said, "If you would want, I can show you my other treasures!" he looked towards his home.
It was capable of far more than violence. it breathed for things that were not death and destruction. the beast, shocked with himself, realized for the first time in a thousand years, he wasn't craving possession of an item but protection of it.
The beast's head bowed. its golden eyes were flooded with curiosity. "To find a treasure such as this. one not made of metals or gems. how can this be what I feel?" The young boy smiled because he realized that for the first time in a thousand years, his people did not need to fear this creature.
as Trenton turned his back on the dragon and began his descent down the mountain, he whispered, "Then let it be so..."
"ENOUGH!" roared the dragon. "You speak of vengeance and hatred as though they are yours to command! they command you! you lose yourself to them, and you will never know a day of peace again!"
"I fail to understand?" he could feel the anger rising, but he didn't care, "I don't care to understand! if death and murder of innocent farmers and laborers is the way he exists, than I will end his existence today! by myself!"
"with a heavy heart and steady eyes, youngling. it does not sit well with me, but that does not mean his actions have failed to meet my understanding." he sighed. "I am sorry to say so, but it is the way he works. just as I work with humans to grow. it is our existence you fail to understand."
"but my sister! my mother! father! all dead for his role!? how can you even say that!?"
For a moment, he looked to the setting sun, lost for how to say what was next. "The Hidden Mountain and its Lord are of the shadow. they live on rocks and snow. what doesn't grow or cannot be sustained, must die so the rest can. while you see him as a villain, he sees himself as fulfilling a role."
"ah, but I am one. my kingdom is the Burning Sea. I live in the light of the sun. the sun that basks your world in warmth and light. others are not as blessed with the world's wonders as I am. others do not feel as I feel. much as one human does not experience the same joys and tragedy as another."
with a deep sigh and what Trenton thought was a bit of sorrow in his eyes, the Lord of the Burning Sea replied, "you are a young creature and as such, his motives will not make sense to you. you see the beauty of flight and imagine that we all must feel as you do." "But you said you do!"
As they landed, he asked what was on his mind, "If that feeling up there. the power and the freedom and all the... just... peace? joy? both? I think that's what that was... if that is what all of you feel, then why did the Lord of the Hidden Mountain kill all my people?"
He sat back, held on tightly, and enjoyed every minute of the flight. He'd never seen the sun set on the clouded horizon. He hoped he would again, but with what lie ahead, there were no guarantees.
"Is this what you always feel like?" He yelled. trying his best to be heard over the roar of the wind. "Yes, human! this is what being a dragon is!"
"Hold tight, human!" the dragon bellowed, spinning into a dive, and he gripped as tightly as he could. this was the second dragon he'd ever met, and by leagues the best. the wind rushed through his hair, and he truly felt alive!
the mighty dragon stretched his wings and looked towards the village, "There is work to be done."
The man began to turn when the dragon spoke one more time. "Fear not, for I will assist you." The man sighed in relief as he turned to thank the dragon. "I shall slay every one of you, and you will hunger no more." With that, the villager was consumed.
"We had hoped if you flew around, you might terrify the thief into leaving." With a sound that seemed to be more snarl than scoff, the dragon spoke, "So you are of the third variety. the most arrogant of mankind's group. how I detest your pleas and your weakness."
"SPEAK," he roared with a thunderous boom. his wings flare out and banish the fog around surrounding him. the man cowered for but a moment before speaking, "Neither, Lord of the Hidden Mountain. I humbly ask for your help. our crops are being stolen. We'll starve if the culprit isn't stopped."
The air is warm. the fog is alive. the dragon emerges from the mist. smoke rises from the curl of his lips. "What brings such a fragile little man thing to the edge of my domain? do you wish to end everything, or are you one of the foolish ones who believes to bring me harm?"
