there was a time when AAA Mid Atlantic would put out a press release saying 'traffic gonna be bad' and we had enough local media to go 'yup, people sure hate traffic' but it seems like neither side is really up to it anymore

this is one of the things you're not going to notice unless you're there all the time. the mind's eye of 'what the Mall is like in summer' can be very deceptive
nevertheless, even absent some kind of universal 'objective' description of the situation, it's not great. the things that are occurring- whether seen or unseen- are offensive to a free society. don't be a sucker.

it's hard to think about security (or even "security") here without thinking about fences and so far, we've been pretty remarkably unfenced, which I think is causing a lot of cognitive dissonance (for me at least)
currently, the prospect of soldiers on city streets is more offensive than it is intimidating. (I am aware that this can change). The roving bands of masked federales are scarier, but also not omnipresent either
this is close to my experience as well. it's extremely uneven and diffuse. Very different from the 'restricted zone' situation post-J6 or even in Summer 2020

I think also, collectively, people here have decided the best approach is to try to give them a nothingburger. I don't think that's from fear but an assessment that this is likely the best play given our very limited options and comparatively weak hand
insofar as there has been local pushback, it's been 1) appropriately scaled to the number of people who live here and 2) reasonably effective in its limited context [14th street checkpoint, chanting at union station, columbia heights escalator]
I don't think the question 'why haven't there been massive protests in the street in DC?' is very deep or complicated. things take time to coordinate, organize, and recruit for. when we have a big march in DC, it's not like it's only the residents here who are out there
it's also driving me crazy that the world's most credulous dupes and dumbest hacks are given such a big platform (though for a diminishingly small audience). I will need to stop engaging with this before my brain leaks out of my head.
