Because a calculator is a device made for a specific purpose, our trust in it would be immediately corrupted if it were to give an incorrect answer. It would be useless. If you take away the specific purpose you also take away the criteria to determine if something works or not.

LinkedIn is #EatPrayLove for boring men.

A LinkedIn post that reads: From the A LinkedIn post that reads “Most people aren't afraid to fail. They're afraid to succeed because that would require them to change. It would require them to become the person who was capable of success. It would require them to let go of the pleasures they are silently addicted to.” A LinkedIn post that reads: “The older I get, the more I realize nobody cares. When you're winning, nobody cares. When you're losing, nobody cares. It doesn't mean nobody loves you, it just means nobody cares about your life as much as you do. It just means that you are in control. It's on you. Nobody cares.” A LinkedIn post that reads “Right now, you have a problem. Maybe it's career-changing big. Maybe it's daily frustration small. But instead of solving it, you get stuck in loops. Running through endless scenarios. Researching until your eyes blur. So what's actually going on? You're scared. Scared of making the wrong choice. Scared of looking foolish. Scared of failing publicly. That quiet voice? That pit in your stomach? That feeling like everyone else has it figured out? That is your brain looking for something that doesn't exist: Certainty. 100% safety. The solutions aren't rocket science. They don't require perfect conditions. They don't need elaborate strategies. They need you to stop thinking and start doing. That problem you've been wrestling with for months? It's not waiting for you to have all the answers. It's waiting for you to take one messy, imperfect step forward. Today…”

Over a year ago I tried LLMs and found their results so unreliable that they were useless. With so much hype I decided to give GPT another test yesterday. I fed MSFT Copilot a zoning document and asked it to extract the differences between 2 columns in a table, it claimed success but was very wrong.

oh stop it, C.P. Snow, with your charming, slightly self-deprecating critique of "computer gadgets" from 1964!

The Gadget Charm My second apprehensive question concerns an intellectual danger with great practical consequences. Cybernetics, as named by its founder, is a beautiful subject with great intellectual variety, depth, and complexity. I suspect, however, that the computer in certain hands could easily become a gadget. Gadgets are the greatest single source of misjudgment that I have ever seen, or that anyone has ever seen in scientific decisions in our time. People get fascinated by gadgets. They love them. They want everything to be explained in terms of their gadget. They think it is the answer to everything on heaven and earth. All the bad decisions I have seen have some element of gadgetry in them. And I suspect that computers in government are going to get into the hands of persons with mildly defective or canalized judgment and become gadgets. It will be astonishing if that does not happen.

The #ProductHunt Top 10 is almost exclusively AI wrappers now. 'Vibe Founders' spend $0.10 on tokens, resell it as a $10 sub and call it innovation. Zero IP, zero value add, zero moat. The word you are looking for is “authoritarianism.”

Expanding alongside Flock’s product line is its mission. The company thinks it can not only solve crimes but improve traffic management and expedite street repairs. Langley envisions a benevolent American panopticon where everyone feels safe and cities use all the data at their disposal to improve our quality of life. “We’ve got all these Flock cameras deployed from a criminal perspective,” Langley says. “Why would we not then walk down to the public works department and say, ‘stop sending people out to look for potholes. I have all that data. Let’s build a better city together’?”
3/9/2025, 1:08:03 PM | 217 35 | View on Bluesky | view

Profile picture Hypervisible (@hypervisible.blacksky.app) reposted reply parent

This unravels the minute you interrogate who is included in his definition of “everyone.”

Langley offers a prediction: In less than 10 years, Flock’s cameras, airborne and fixed, will eradicate almost all crime in the U.S. (He acknowledges that programs to boost youth employment and cut recidivism will help.) It sounds like a pipe dream from another AI-can-solve- everything tech bro, but Langley, in the face of a wave of opposition from privacy advocates and Flock’s archrival, the $2.1 billion (2024 revenue) police tech giant Axon Enterprise, is a true believer. He’s convinced that America can and should be a place where everyone feels safe. And once it’s draped in a vast net of U.S.-made Flock surveillance tech, it will be. “I’ve talked to plenty of activists who think crime is just the cost of modern society. I disagree,” Langley says. “I think we can have a crime-free city and civil liberties. . . . We can have it all.” In municipalities in which Flock is deployed, he adds, the average criminal—those between 16 and 24 committing nonviolent crime—“will most likely get caught.”

ok a question: if you could have your students read one thing on genAI that you hope will encourage them not to use it, what would it be?

"we may do this, we aren't yet tho to respect privacy" is such a spoiler, honestly if this is how someone tried to not spoil the ending of a movie you'd punch them

Effort can neither be created nor destroyed; rather, it can only be transformed or transferred from one form to another

Wild how they address this by offloading it on to parents rather than, say…making a safer product.

recorded this on friday morning pursuant to a conversation with @fasterandworse.com on the state of hiring technical roles ("technical" in the broadest sense, ie you have to know how things work and how to do things other than delegate) but only just had the opportunity to post: youtu.be/mUTbhG1z1N4

To gauge how it’s “working,” one would have to be clear on what the actual work is, which is not helping to educate children but rather to imbed these systems in a way that they cannot be removed, establish them as a source of truth, and destabilize labor.

Nick Moir (Sydney Morning Herald), Dec 2019 - a big plane dropping water on fires in Australia (water is coloured with a red dye to show where it's been dropped)

a photograph taken from underneath a very large plane. The sky is sort of burnt orange and the plane is dropping a large amount of water. The water has been coloured with a red dye and it has quite an amazing effect

It's happened! My newsletter has finally Gone Woke! Trump appointed landlord app AirBnB's co-founder as the Chief Design Officer of the USA, right after DOGE blew up 18F (which did real work). And the UX commentariat cheers, because the vibes of a "seat at the table" play better than the reality.

I know I keep saying this, but I really cannot overstate how many meetings I sat in at Microsoft where the big idea was to just do Clippy again, but with AI. This was always presented as an unquestionably good idea, because everyone knew Clippy had been a huge success.
